I won't be using Expedia again.
I am not quite sure how it happened, but I ended up being charged twice for one night's accommodation at the Elizabeth Hostel in Melbourne. I have given up trying to get a refund. In future I will book direct with the hotel/motel/hostel.

Given that the big OTAs (online travel agents) charge 15% to 30%, which you as the guest are paying for, I'm surprised there's not more who book direct. Check out Trip Advisor and then go to the accommodation website.

Caveat: You may not make the saving fully to offset the 15% - 30% but you may get added value. (eg free spa, meal discount, extra night or something) and all you money will be going the the provider. Next step is to book with locally-owned/family-run accommodation. ;)

When I am looking at flying overseas, I look up Flight Centre but book directly with the airline.
