It's a genetic trait most humans share. Echinoderms don't leave behind evidence of evolution; and it seems they have simply always been starfish; likely until you get back to the 'handful of cells' stage. Welp, because the mint originally had an idea that change pieces would work on a fraction of silver contained because the primary coin was still the silver dollar. So a dime would be 1/10 the silver dollar worth/size...and thus the nickel was meant to be 1/20, but this was determined to be much too small...so they went with nickel instead of silver and the new size. Your going to come. For a while it'll be like a scramble for a fumbled football over what few large oil deposits remain that we can easily access; with a large portion of the economy returning to the tried and true region of warfare. Then we'll cannibalize certain areas of the world while some scant money will be thrown at finding other fuel sources; perhaps even space becoming an investigated option - though when the breakthrough comes, it'll come at the end of all manner of conflict that will probably leave most of the world considerably destabilized.
