Just as when a person has BO, it's just the sweat and such oozing from their pours...or when a skunk smells, it's actually the remnants of the last spraying it gave that smell and not the poor, misunderstood skunk.

A foot kept in a shoe that ends up smelling from sweat is no different from a foot kept bare that ends up smelling from being covered in dog poo. You can argue semantics, but in the end - they both stink.
