I don't see the two philosophies excluding one another; as the Cartesians do not necessarily believe in any deity or higher power.
So if an object in motion tends to stay in motion, and in space there are very few forces acting against it, why can't we send un-manned spaceships to distant planets? I mean, can't they just program it to come back? why is 1/3 expressed as 3.33 repeating when that's not really one third?
I enjoyed them! Thank you for keeping my evening entertaining. Keeping those ships powered is a problem; as is getting them past our gravitational pull and that of other objects out there. Also, we're still not at the scientific level to guarantee high-quality and constant communication with such things when they're at those faraway planets. And for the second bit; it goes along with the premise that you can always cut any number in half - so in all reality, you can't truly have a 'third' of a number because there are essentially infinite halfway-points between it and the next digit. That's why repeating decimals like 3.33... are still considered rational numbers.
A mix of luck, wits, good advertising, properly applied wry humor, and a dash of mystery. Someone managed to lock themselves out, the rain is just hitting your window at an odd angle, or it's el chupacabra. ...and with that, I'm off for the evening. But have no fear, I'll catch up on the thread tomorrow night.
Have you ever seen the Romantic era painting "The Monk by the Sea" by Caspar David Friedrich? Every time I see your signature picture it reminds me of it. (yes, not really a question like the others are posting but I figured I'd post it anyway)
I really think it's more reminiscent of Friedrich's Wanderer Above the Sea. It's always made me think of this one. Question: Why does Zeno's paradox of the Dichotomy fail to accurately represent motion? I'd give you +rep for this thread if I could.
You are totally right! I forgot about this one. I was studying romantic era paintings last semester but "The Monk by the Sea" was the name I remembered. Thank you for bringing this one up. Much better.
