So is there really an upswing in violent crime or is the media coverage of the sensational type murders really distorting our perception i.e. our reality?

yes, the media focuses and exaggerates these events, but as the article you linked states, the overall violent crime rate in the U.S. has been declining for decades.

did you read the linked article where it is suggested that because of public outcry the police have been more cautious/reluctant to "do their job" because when they do idiots start rioting and make the situation worse.
so a black felon gets killed in the commission of a crime and then the community gets all riled up so the police back off a bit and then the scumbags take advantage and commit even more crime and then the idiots in the community start crying about the lack of police protection!!!!????

Have you never been close to death? Don't you realize the catastrophic failure of any system is only a matter of time and that all the things you day to day call your life are arbitrary? We live in a world based on false senses of security and disproportionate senses of threat. All the same in our ignorance we are potent and potently present the world with our own perilous folly as we are consumed by abstract and dehumanizing values of health and wealth.

Not to worry though, correction will be brutal enough to slap some taste into our mouths. Or at least poisoning the water and the air will gag a few. Already it is so for a vast and increasing number of species. It is unfortunate as a fact of our fortune that it takes mass catastrophe to sensitize people to the need for fundamental change in the way we do business in the world. The global police state defacto exists to uphold the economic system which is a system of control of resources by the people who control the money so this is generally the most we need account for.

Media are a distraction or a circus side show to genuinely vital events which are those things that occur within your own circle of influence. How you treat your children going forward is the most influential thing we do. We need to learn to be creature in nature in order to be civilized over all. NO news report on the statistical analysis of human behavior means squat in the light of this vital necessity.

 

Systems of government and systems of monetary exchange used to be rigged locally throughout and wherever. Now the rigging is worldwide. It's rigged because WE allow it. This will only end when WE demand it.
