Here is a reality check from an old hippy. I graduated from high school in 65. Los Angeles was on fire with riots. The Viet Nam war was on going. Possession on any amount of pot was a felony that could land you in prison for years. Homosexuals got beat up. :( The authorities could not care less. When I was in school, if your hair (For guys) was over your ears or collar you were sent home. No sandals were allowed. We had a draft. The voting age was 21 not 18. Taxation without representation is nothing. Try being sent off to war against you will without representation. The summer of love was more of a fantasy than anything else. Also, if you had been born early enough to enjoy the sixties you would now be my age with most of your life behind you.

I believe that you were all born into the age you were meant to be. In many ways things are much cooler and groovier today than they were then. As a very wise person once said "Remember, be here, now!" After all, this is all we have. So enjoy it. <(^o^)>

I didn't say that did i ? I personally enjoy the music from the 60's & 70's more then I enjoy the music today. So yes, being able to see some of my favourite bands live would be amazing, it would be freedom in a musical sense. + Music was an expression of freedom in a world where it was lacking.

Your just criticizing everyone for respecting the past.

There's never been complete peace or freedom, there will always be struggles, war, pain and suffering. It's not that everyone thinks it was all fine and dandy back then but the GOOD times that have been passed on are exciting to hear & think about.

I'm sorry if you don't care about the past and what has been done to get to where we are today.

Born in 1992 (just turned 17 this month), in Amsterdam and still live here. \o/ :D
Sometimes I do wonder what it would've been like in the sixties. I guess in Amsterdam it was different than in America too, but I'm happy I'm alive now.

Of course I care about the past, I am eternally grateful to things that happened in the 60's like the feminist movement, I just don't like the idea of people always wishing they could live in the 60's, and only remembering the positive things about that era, without the negative too.

and it's not respecting the past that I am criticizing, it's idolizing

you're absolutely right. nothing wrong with being inspired by the good things that were going on, but there was plenty of not good stuff going on too...just like any other decade.

Same here. Respecting the past and feeling like you're born in the wrong age are two different things.

I've always felt i should be living in a different era, but i can never settle on just one, lol!

Your life and your scene is what you make it, regardless of the era you are living in - in the romantic era they embraced the classical age, in the hippie era they embraced the romantic era....it's all a state of mind

I feel the coolest thing about the time we live in now, is that we have the information and resources available to us that we can actually choose to surround ourselves with the era of our choice - we can acquire music, literature, art, furniture, clothing etc from all periods of time - something most people were never able to do before....i dig it! :)

Don't misunderstand, Sobebella. There was a lot of fun to be had then also. Love ins on the weekend. The sexual revolution was getting started. We set the foundation for what we have today. And that is a good thing. I just want people to understand that these times were not all flowers and getting high. I also want people to be happy with what they have now. In many ways thing today are much better than in the sixties. (Although I think the music was better then. lol) Also, the internet (which did not exist back then.) allows us like minded people to get together and share our thoughts. This is the medium in which new paradigms are created, and old paradigms are changed or even destroyed. So, keep the faith and be happy! <(^o^)>

I was born in 93 also. From what ive seen this year, id' say the 60's were way better. 2009 is crazy as shit, and not the kind of crazy i'm used to.

I don't think you're objective. You viewed and experienced shit personally in 2009, what have you seen of 1969? Only the rose-coloured hippie movement. Yeah, it was a time of change, but not only because of that particular movement. Now is just as much a time of change, with or without that movement. Just as the 70's, the 80's, the 90's and before the 60's. You don't need a bus to be on the bus, you just need to be here experiencing today.

It's fun to remember and talk about the Sixties, but I am 100 times happier now than I was back then. Please everyone, Be Here Now.

Oh Im still loving now.. back then just built the foundation for what everything is now. thats the way its always been... learn from the previous and build upon it although I would have to agree with the previous post about the music was a lot better and soulfull back then. Seems music has got a lil bit whacked. What happened to all the instruments and the meaningful lyrics?? So sad.. although not to say that all that all the present music is useless!

Yeah, I think music peaked in the period 1967-1973. I mostly blame greedy record companies and the War on Some Drugs for the decline since then.

Agreed.. since all the reformations, revolutions and what not... people seem to take simple things in life for granted, always having to push things to limit just to see how much something can take. Everyones entitled to their own beliefs, nothing wrong with that, but when you take the music out of the music its really not music anymore now is it? I mean how can you really define music anyways? Ive always thought of it as anything with a beautiful or different sound that compliments other sounds among it. Then collaborated with these beautiful lyrics that have meaning behind them. Then I turn on the radio now and I hear this so called rap music. Yes its still self expression but wheres the passion behind it? Its so angry vulgar and derogatory! I just dont understand and makes me really sad  and im tired of everything trying to be all segragated again. Everything is split into stereotypes now. Everything is done the way it is thought that its supposed to be done.. what ever happened to originality? Ive still got it and im gonna keep on keepn on! Man I love life!
