I really do because the next one will kill me. We have flu shots, pneumonia shots and now shingles shots,,, what about the common cold??? Is it too much to ask? The last three times I have had a cold I seriously thought I was gonna die. This last one hit me in minutes at 11 pm. It came hard with a persistant spazmatic caugh that made it hard for me to breath until 6 am. My head was spinning and my chest was hurting seriously bad in one hour of this and yet I couldnt calm down for five freakin mins to take even a snooze let alone a simple rest. I was totally trashed in hours and it kept coming. Its gone already, was like the perfect storm, here for a short time and ready to take me out. The next day and the following two days I have been hacking bad but not like the first night and now its calmed down to nearly nothing but I am still trashed. My ribs hurt, anything going down my throat too fast feels like a Very hard slap on the outside of my throat. Even my hair still hurts. When will they vaccinate us from the common cold? I have never known a flu to treat me as bad as the last few colds have in the past few years, thinking this is the big one, start digging my hole and come get my money,,, I do know that a major department store chain had it years ago. They'd have workers come to ask to go home sick, pop them a pill and the worker felt fine 30 mins later and could work the rest of the day. Once it was made known back then that you cant dose people like that without their doc's permission it was removed,,, what the hell was it??? Why the hell isnt the common cold as important as those others we can get vaccinated for? What do you take? I never used to get sick, with flu or cold and yet these colds are attacking me hard, like death walking on my face,,, not kidding! Help me if you know what works, pleeeeease, I am seriously afraid of the next one.
are you familiar with what common cold actually is? it's a huge number of different viral strains that mutate very rapidly. even if a vaccine was developed for one strain and administered to you, that only means you'd be immune to that single strain. all the rest of the hundreds of strains will still infect you. meanwhile the viruses keep mutating and new strains created. and on and on it goes. you can't prevent it with a vaccine. once you get common cold you in fact do develop antibodies for it in your system. so you won't catch that particular type of it anymore. but by next year the virus has mutated, it's a whole new thing that your body doesn't immediately recognize and it starts all over again. they taught us this stuff in the 9th grade where i grew up.
I used to get colds all of the time. Everything that I eat and drink now is at least lightly cooked and served warm. Since then I don't get sick that often.
Eat healthy food (eliminate as much sugar and processed foods as possible) Get plenty of sleep (7-9 hours per night) Supplement with vitamin D (1,000IU per 25 lbs), vitamin C (5,000mg), zinc and iodine Take a quality probiotic (most of your immune system is in your gut) This will pretty much guarantee you don't get sick, and far more than any vaccine, given one was available for the common cold. I haven't gotten sick in years, and even in the past it seems like I would only get sick whenever I was feeling run down.
Yes I do remember it in school, and they said it was over 200 strains if I heard right back then. Better yet its all over the net for a refresher if needed, with updates. Yes they can protect us from the common cold, (like they can from some cancers already but wont) its already known, would kill the drug industry if they offered it to us now wouldnt it. Yet they can vaccinate for the flu,,, as a flu strain is seen coming you say? Yes but within ten years they hope to have a one time flu shot they are working on now approved that will vaccinate us for life. They can protect us from pneumonia, and even shingles now, so cool... So, Dont bet your whole basket on what you read in grade nine Buddy because unless yer in grade 10 right now my bets are lots has changed since you left the building and didnt turn to look back. My schooling doesnt stop there, at grade nine. I reach out on forums like this, talk to friends, and read as much from medical sights and books as I can. You might stand to find out someday that not much you read back then is as interesting to anyone anymore, it's just background noise to the new stuff we know and want to know now. If you had read my original message in full you'd see my real hope was, until they protect us, maybe someone here has a tried and proven method of fast recovery or prevention,,, Oh, hey! Someone did and I thank you Pressed Rat,,, the iodine one is something I never thought of but since that can help the Thyroid and the Thyroid works with the immune system as well it stands to reason it might be a great addition to what I already do as well. I will add it to my ammunition pack. Also I have never had my VitD that high, only about 2000 to 3000IU during colds or other illnesses, usually 1000IU daily, will sneak it up there before my next yearly blood tests, maybe I can ask for a CBC and see results on it. I love numbers. My last cold showed some great response in the throat and downward to Echinacea and zinc, this time not so much.
either your English is bad or you're one of those paranoid types who thinks conspiracy theories are real. those evil drug companies who already make millions on drugs and will continue to do so with or without your common cold vaccine, are withholding other drugs and information and forcing scientists all over the world involved in the process of developing drugs to shut up and lie on the subject. you believe that you truly are a moron. i'm 30. it's right there under my handle along with location and other stuff. i'm long out of high school, been through flight academy and am currently attending my second college. sure things evolve, new knowledge becomes available, but the common cold situation hasn't changed much. says the person who thinks drug companies are withholding cancer/common cold vaccines... try placebo. might work in your case.
I eat healthy, sleep well, work out a lot, work outside...never get sick. I don't even remember the last time I was sick.
Even if a vaccine for the cold was possible, it seems a little unnecessary. The first day with a cold is miserable but after that its mostly just annoying. I used to get a cold around twice a year but I haven't in a couple of years. My diet is a lot better than it used to be and I also take a probiotic supplement.
i haven't had a common cold or been sick since my last year in high school. which is for more than 10 years now. i don't know why. i've been exposed to it through workspace, etc, i'm sure i've come in contact with the viruses most years, but i haven't gotten sick.
My wife works for the school district. You'd think she would bring home all those sick kid germs....thankfully, that doesn't seem to be a problem.
Well you always hear "the get plenty of vitamin C"advice and good hand washing routines can help a lot,but as for the common cold i dont ever remember having a cold that would affect me that seriously!!The FLU WAS A REAL BITCH,but a cold, wasnt the end of the world and something to dread!at least for me it wasnt.....but hey, everyone's different,as for a cure....^^everyone's right on the money, there just isnt a "cure"...... Come to think of it they make some spray IIRC called"coldease" and its supposed to actually shorten the duration of the cold,or your money back, but I'm no dr,so what do I know??
And lucky you, this is what I used to say for many years, things do change but dont take my word for it. I can honestly say I never got sick till my husband passed away with very short notice and no hope to try and save him, since then I have had every little thing on the wind hit me. Its likely my own immunity thats still down even all this time later but that doesnt mean others havent suffered enough to search like I am for relief. Now we can play the "your english is bad, I'm arrogant" cards here you have chosen in this thread already or we can hope others come in with more tricks to help us all when we are in need because they are out there, old family tricks, newly discovered ones, lets hear em all. And while I am at it,,, There's no hard feelings here so You have a nice night
Haven't Had A Cold For 7 1/2 Years, And That Was When I Started Fulltime Barefooting, Apparently Walking Through Frost, Snow And Ice Builds Up Your Immune System.... I'm No Doctor, So I Can't Explain It Any Better Than That, But One Thing I Do Know I Have Been Cold Free For That Period Of Time...:2thumbsup:. Cheers Glen.
There are no tricks when it come to colds. Avoiding them is mostly luck, if you do catch one, you just gotta tough it out. One way to get over a cold faster is leave the cold medications on the shelf. There's a purpose to your bodys immune reactions. When you take things like antihistamines and fever reducers you are only interfering and delaying the process. Try to eat something, plenty of liquids and lots of rest is about all you should do.
You might not be so far off in your thinking Glen. Some major Spa resorts have as one of their therapies for health, a trail like walking in a creek with rails to hold onto while you basically prit near chill your feet during the walk with different textures under the water, like sand and rocks and such. Its supposed to help the whole body. I couldnt do it myself because I have an unrepairable nerve damage in both of my feet resulting from a back issue I was born with. The intense cold drives me nuts, even to walk barefoot on floors at night is something I cant do. I love my floors and I hate carpets but I do have to wear slippers all the time even tho I do keep my house reasonably warm at night. That idea might help someone tho, who knows,,, thanks for your input.
Consider the body's infinite wisdom. Each infection has the potential to take you out of your routine, to cleanse, rebalance and ground you and like an infallible indicator give you insight into where you are - maybe it is something your spirit has asked for. Use it for deeper rest and poring over your life and death and enjoy it as much as you can (well trying to give you the picture here) - means make it a blessing, and take it as medicine for what is underneath the surface. Just more thoughts :coffee:
I also should have mentioned...I never take "medicines". Not even type of minor pain killers. My opinion is that the body is meant to take care of itself. If I injure myself in some way, I need to adjust what I do until it heals, not mask the pain and keep injuring myself. I have a feeling that when people pump themselves full of medications for every little thing, it lowers their immune system.
