you wanna talk about responsibility far beyond that of parenting.. yeah.. go ahead and own a monkey...

ferrets are cool.. i use to own 2.. they do get a lil stinky. but are great pets and relatively cheap after you get past all the shit you need to buy first..

Ball python's are pretty cool chill snakes, i love mine... or you could get some kind of bird, just not a budgie, they effing suck, i work at a pet store, I know! lol

hamsters and gerbils blow too! you could get a ferret, they're kind of like cats
    and rats are also cool.

fish are awesome to look at but the initial setup is somewhat expensive ang it's really a hobby.

either way, the initial buying of the cage and all other equipment and the pet is always pricey but then all you have to do is love it and feed it.

birds are nothing but disease infested money milkers.. for the most part.. they get sick easily.. and usually cost a ton when you do have to take them to the vet

fish arent really pets in my mind. theyre decorations that need feeding.

i honestly hate spiders (and most other bugs). they can be totally hamless, but i just dont trust them somehow. if theres a spider in my bathroom, i immediately squish it with a candle dedicated to that purpose (the bottom has several carcasses stuck to it), and am intensely paranoid for the rest of the evening that theres probably another of the harmless little buggers waiting to crawl on me.

turtles, if you dont mind your pet outliving you :) btw i am pro spider and never kill them, just release them, why? because for every spider i put outside, it kills 5 wasps/ticks/any other bug worse than spiders. probably wont make a difference but i like to think it does. but if its veneomous(poisonous way different) then thats overkill and ill light it on fire XD

snakes can be good pets, I used to have two corn snakes. At my old house I have a 26 year old cat with asthma called Alice. Greatest animal I've ever known...getting a pet rat soon aswell

Whats your budget for a pet?

so many pages.. ugh haha i didn't read them all yet but i like the ideas i found so far. i'd like a snake but i'd be afraid of pissing it off by accident and being attacked. haha oh and i don't know about a 30 yr commitment..

my budget, i don't know.. what's typical? i'm cheap and broke. can't get a pet til after i have a job anyway.

well here's the deal.. with a snake you can start off with a small tank.. but you will within a year or two have to buy a bigger tank.. you need at least one hide box.. one water dish.. and a source of UV heat/or a ceramic heating element(way more expensive than a bulb).. seeing as boas/corn snakes are nocturnal.. also you will need something for it to climb on preferably and aspen or cypress bedding.. this is all for a proper set up...

for a cheapo setup.. you can buy a ceramic dog dish for water(needs to be heavy or your snake will just knock it over), a large plastic tub w/ lid and small holes dirlled into the lid(the tank), a smaller plastic tub with a hole cut in the top for him to access(hide) and a heat source(usually just kept in an area of the house that will provide 80-90F.. and newspaper lining the bottom for easy clean up

Proper setup(with small starter tank): roughly $200 not including the snake
    Cheapo setup: roughly $50

thanks for the info, greatly appreciated.
i don't see myself committing that long to my pet though. :(

also i'm concerned about monthly $ when i talk about budget too.

    Here is my set-up:
-60gal tank w/ log hides, water ponds.. beading.. fake foliage.. heat lamp and reptile heating pad.. roughly $300
-20gal tank w/ bedding.. roughly $120(feeding tank, having a separate area for feedings helps reduce accidental bites)
-10gal tank with bedding, water bottle $90(used for holding food)

obviously starting out you do not need this at all.. and luckily i got it all for $75

my snake eats 2 small rats a month.. and it costs about $11/mo..

obviously when you first get your snake it'll only eat pinkies(new born mice) they are only like $2... once ever 7-11 days
