i need to have a bag that can hold up to at least 20 pounds... i'm a momma of a two and half year old son, and my purse also often becomes my boyfriend's pockets as well, so I often have a lot of stuff that I'm carrying around.... LOTS of organization, but I can add all that later if I need to.... I would like animal friendly fabric... I like the messenger bag style... so... yeah, I do like the army surplus idea... I'm going to check it out next time I get to the surplus shop...
Pac Designs makes some really tough high quality stuff. Also, still high quality but a bit cheaper and more simplistic is Cocotte Equipment. Those are a couple I can think of that are made to haul a lot of stuff, as you said you do. Most of the more stylish bags I've seen out there, as cool as they look, just don't hold enough.
When I'm looking for stuff that lasts for pretty cheap I go to an army surplus store, everything is black and green with the exception of arctic gear which is white. If you have time on your hands hand made is great, look up patterns on forums or in the fabric store; then get some fabric to practice on and you can make some pretty cool stuff with a little bit of work. I made a bag for my sewing stuff and it works pretty well.
