I don't like geniuses. And, obviously, I like some people who describe themselves as "average smart." Anyway, there is really no reason to categorize so much as we do.
I AGREE! i'm smart enough, but i can barely add in my head. i just don't think that way. i have other stregths. it's like the science kids thinking they're smarter than the guys in woodshop or art or whatnot. you can't learn talent.
People put too much emphasis on abstraction. Conceptual intelligence is not everything. Information-gathering is not either.
yeah. i have almost no practical skills, nor do i have the attention span to learn them. if it's mechanical or mathmatic, i doze off within minutes. but other people will be great with that stuff and snooze within moments of sitting through my favorite programs or lectures.
it really bugs me when people get snobby and flipping superior about something like that. learn a little humility and care for other people's strengths.
i mean the things i enjoy learning about: art, archeology, history, obscure shit that no one actually needs to know to get by in the world. it was always thus. i'm not allowed to handle tools or anything mechanical or sharp. seriously. i'm a klutz.
Languagewise I want to brush up my Spanish and Bahasa Malay. And for a new language I want to learn Mandarin Chinese one day. Latin is cool to know, but a bit too useless in my opinion. I prefer to speak languages that have a use for me.
spanish fluently, german fluently, snowboarding, surfing, a bit of webdesign, and a lot about business.
So what if its useless ? I like it. True, there is no practical purpose in knowing Latin. And I dont really care - I'm learning it for my own personal pleasure.
There are so many things I want to learn. I want to learn how to knit, paint...I want to be proficient in Spanish, French, and a Native American language. I want to learn more about different cultures first hand. I want to learn how to open up to people. I live in one of the most horrible states education wise. I'm pretty proud of myself and what I know in that respect. I'm not too proud to admit that I don't understand or know what some people are talking about. Pavel I understand about feeling smarter than your peers. Now that I'm at a different school I can actually have intelligent conversations.
