Oh yeah, and I spell it theatre because America bastardized the English language by reversing the er.

i get tired of people who use the word "theatre" to try and sound extra sophisticated. that's all. the word "theater" suffices in every context. i dont see any reason to use the word. in my experience, most american people who use the word "theatre" do so to try and sound like they're above US spellings of words, even though as far as i'm aware it's not a geographical difference.

anyway, to be honest of all "groups" of people i dislike for no substantial reason, theater kids are the worst. it's true, even goth and skater kids rank higher with me...

maybe thats backwards, but at least goth and skater kids don't think they're extra sophisticated and special because of it. the worst is when some theater kid is always speaking with fake accents, even in day to day conversation, or when they're singing/dancing/in character in every day situations.....

    god damn annoying theater kids.....

I'm a theatre kid punk, and I am not fake.

I differentiate theatre from theater, simply because they are different things

a movie theater can be a theatre, but it has to have a certain freedom about it

you can show movies in the lear theatre, but that does not make it a theater, you could put on plays at a cinemark bullshit house, and it would not make it a theatre.

    so saith the techie.

I've never spelled it theater...and I never will. And I was a drama geek, but I was crew and bit parts and highly annoyed by the ones who you generalize us all as.

its not that all theater folks are pretentious snobs. it's that the difference lies in quality and attitude, not spelling.

i was incorrect in the "american vs. british" thing.

still, as ridiculous as webster may have been for creating an american "language," it's what's used here. and if you aren't saying colour, favourite and so on, then there is no reason to use the term "theatre"

the difference is petty and virtually nonexistant, not to mention pretentious (that is, among people who use the spelling only to stand out, and not because it is the norm in their locale)

it's a differentiation between different kinds of theater/theatre,

it is not pretense, it is a more precise execution of the english language than is typically made available

and ANY precision I can eke out of this ambiguous thing called language WILL be used.

people from the us who spell things the "right" (as in the british way) still pronounce them in the american form, so why bother?

the claim that it is a difference of quality goes back to the turn of the century (that is, the beginning of the 20th century, not the 21st) but it doesnt make it more substantial. the phrase originally was meant to distinguish between motion pictures and stage "theatre," so that relatively uninformed patrons would know what they were getting themselves into....but these days, there is plenty of garbage on stage and plenty of masterpieces on the screen, and the meaning of the phrases have changed. fine. so what?

fact is, its all a matter of opinion, and not a matter of being precise.

wow, you are being pretentious, AND judgmental, and accusing others of being so

    that's bullshit.

look, I use it for the sake of precision, yes, some people use it to stand out, but making a bullshit generalization about all theater kids, is as ignorant as making a blanket statement aboug all gay people, or all black people

it's just a smaller group, that you are ignorant in regard to, so you deem it acceptable

yes, people choose to be theatre people, yes, there is a much higher presence of incredibly fake folk, queers, crazy fucks, and alcoholics amongst theatre folk than most other groups.

that does NOT give you the right to judge them so broadly.

I have found more friends, and, really, family, amongst the theatre community, than any other, and, though there are foibles, EVERY group has foibles and imperfections, be they beer snobs, frat boys, theatre geeks, techies, trekkies, conners, or what have you.

broad generalizition about this group is really offensive to a group of REALLY cool people, yeah, we have our assholes, but, every group does

so jam your ignorant bullshit up your ass, and go bitch about how this years thus and such stout isn't up to expectations, I'll go fix my PAR-45, and we'll go on about shit, K?

the post you quoted has nothing to do with blanket statements about theater people. it has only to do with spelling and such.

relax, man. i'm not attacking you or anyone else. i'm saying i think it's dumb and, yes, even pretentious to make such a big deal out of a fucking word. out of SPELLING.

the point is it doesnt MATTER, and a lot of whats on stage is trash, just like a lot of whats on screen, and the differentiation is not about precision for just that reason.

its just silly, thats all. i'm not insulting you or anyone else. there are tons of fucking annoying assholes in the theater, thats a fact, and you've admitted as much. i'm not saying there aren't any great people in it, too. i know there are.

i'm saying its silly to get so worked up about spelling something a certain way to sound cool, or to "make a distinction" (which, in practice if not principle, is to say it is above something else, more worthy, more whatever........which you've given ample evidence of)

i levelled no assaults on an artform, nor did i make any blanket statements saying ALL or even most people involved with the theater were obnoxious, pretentious assholes. only that people who make a big deal out of spelling it "theatre" instead of "theater" (when they live in the US) do so, usually, to make themselves sound more sophisticated.

in turn you've made a number of false assumptions about me, put words in my mouth, and even offered obsenities towards me specifically to make your point. way to go, man

generalizations, accepted as such. not blanket statements. generalizations are quite different than statements claiming all members of this or that group are a certain way, or think certain things, or whatever.

    just chill out man.
