Ate it for the first time last night and woke up this morning with a hot, itchy rash all over my arms, chest and stomach.

    Anyone else had this before?

It may be saponin causing an allergic response. Most of it can be removed from the grain by washing it. Others have said that it may be caused by salicylate in the grain. I don't think salicylate can be removed easily.

Plants tend to have residual chemicals on them that act as a natural pesticide.

Salicylates are a main ingredient of aspirin. Many plant foods contain it. Quinoa is supposed to have only a small amount of it, so maybe it's something else in quinoa that made you react. Or perhaps it wasn't the Quinoa.

    Here's a useful site:

I did fine. We washed it but didn't have to do alot. It's an organic quinoa.

I am off to the doctors in a few hours, my rash hasn't gone away and is stinging and burning like nobody's business. :( I couldn't go to work today, either. It freaking sucks!

I am really glad you were OK eating it, Aerianne! It's so strange I am not normally allergic to anything! Mine was an organic one, too. So bizzare, especially as it says on the packet that quinoa is among the least allergenic foods available...!!!

Maybe it's something else. The doc will fix you up. Hives and rashes are miserable things. Feel better soon!

He said it's probably a food allergy as the quinoa was the only new thing I had done, but that the symptoms weren't quite what you would expect for a food allergy - ie it should be an itchy rash, not a burning, painful one. Anyway he gave me some prednisone, so will see how we go.
