I don't know what to think about this. Two guys came to my door just now. One was wearing a jacket with a direct energy logo on it. He asked for my con Edison bill and said that I needed to give some information to lock in my rates before the energy rates go up. All this may be true but what sketched me out is he called a number and then said a they will call me (I did give him my cell phone number). He said "they are gonna ask you if the agent has left and your gonna say yes but I will be here to help you with the information on this form". Right there I was like wat! Why am I supposed to lie about that? When I did pick up the phone she said she was going to ask me to verify some information, this call will be recorded and I can't answer any questions during this call! I asked her did you just say you cannot answer any questions and she said "yes". I asked again so you will not answer a question and she said "yes". Not no I can't answer a question but yes..this feels like classic social engineering tactics to me. This just made me unconfortable and I told the lady I wasn't interested and told them to get the fuck outta here. I really don't know what to think. I think I'll call Con Edison myself later and see what they have to say about it but I don't feel comfortable giving someone information or "verifying" it if they won't answer questions!
Yeah those dudes are probably re-sellers or something, trying to trick you into switching to them. We get them up here too.
They must take me as a fool. Deregulation is not a new thing lol. I don't give out information without some questions bein fuckin answerd pal! And somehow I feel guilty about bein somewhat rude, the guy seemed like a nice person but that's the way social engineering works!
One time my roommate gave one of those guys our power bill and we all made fun of her for it after lol.
She gave it to the guy and he went off with it? I just did a reverse number search on the number that called and it's from Tulsa, OK. Southwestern Bell...scammer score 100%. Fuck outta here!
I showed it to the guy because he said he had to show me something on the bill in reference to the deal he was trying to give me (bs). He wrote some stuff down on a form acct number and stuff and gave it for me and I was supposed to fill out the rest of it while I was on the phone with the lady. I told him get the fuck out and he wanted the form back (y man? U got plenty of em?) so I said sure, procured a sharpie and marked out everything with black ink. I noticed a pissed off look on his face but he did a decent job of suppressing it and turning it into a smile.
Wow, a second different guy came to my door a few minutes later trying to pull the same shit. These guys are fuckin persistent aren't they! I'm not about playing games!
All-in-all,I think 'Well done you',Acek. No winners,true-but no losers. In the circs, that counts as a win for you,m'man!
I told him I have the book on social engineering. I'd take a picture of the cover but can't find it right now but I think it's called The Art of Deception or something similar by Kevin Mitnick. I feel terrible about the people that will not recognize these tactics and be played.
They could have been impersonating an agent and not even be who they say they are. Call me paranoid but it's not beyond means to procure an outfit and go out information gathering. The outfit doesn't have to be an exact copy of the real thing cuz no one really knows "exactly" how it should look. I've heard about things like that on the news it really happens. No im not crazy, just smart. They set up call centers and shit and can fool,a lot of people. I don't understand why people go to such efforts to set up and run illegal or sketchy businesses.
I can tend to be overly careful, too....where some might think it is paranoia, but I don't care....I rather be safe than sorry sometimes.
there prob. casing your place too. watch your mail, lock your doors. sounds shady open the door with the shotgun next time. they,ll stay away then.
