It's called "Home Before Daylight." It was written by one of their roadies. AWESOME book. Has anyone else read it?

yes!! i've read this book and i think it's the best grateful dead book writen so far. i've also read "a long strange trip" by dennis mcnalie and "searching for the sound" by phil lesh. a long strange trip was more like something you'd find on the history channel. still good but a bit dry. and searching for the sound was good but lacked the "road story" appeal of home befor daylight (sorry phil).

"good but a bit dry" is a good description of Dennis McNally himself.
He's handling contact with Ratdog these days and he's a most amazing presence.
Efficient, polite but not chummy. You still want to get him a beer, though.

What made "Home before Daylight" such a good book?
Scully's book soured me on insider revalations.
(yeah, like it WASN'T his fault Jerry scored so much smack....)

I think it's the best book so far because it doesn't focus on the "historical aspect" of the band, but more on the day to day life with the band on the road. Much more human, more humorus, and all around more fun.

I found this on the bargain shelf.
I rather liked it for the flow & the lack of overt attempts to polish the clay feet of the Dead and Crew.
I loved the bit about the two main crew following Phil to his parents' home and passing Parish and Shurtliff streets.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Ramrod, but I know his son. He's a good techie and a kind soul... unless he's setting up.

    and for Woodstock freaks:

Jerry and possibly Rosalie Sorrels in an impromptu jam.

I just read "Growing Up Dead"
It's about one guys experience being a Deadhead more than it is about the band, but the Deadhead is a part of the story that is essential to know about.

and if you are into that, see Cooking with the Dead by Elizabeth Zipern. Mostly personal stories with a recipe.

It is a good book, Steve Parrish is a cool guy. Really shows the evils or Heroin and Cocaine and the tolls it takes not only on the user, but the people in their life.

    I'd agree with that.
One of the books really showed how Jerry was isolated in his addiction. Maybe McNally's but I can't remember.
