It's the creepy old men you gotta watch out for. Particularly the ones with the nondescript van that beckon you come closer with promises of... Yeah, I think you get the picture.

He was having a very bad day after the interaction with the customer before you, and who knows what happened before that. It takes some people a while to calm down after an interaction like that, and remember, he's young and probably hasn't done customer service that long, which means he needs more time and experience. Or, he may have found out at that moment that this job just isn't for him anymore, and has become disgruntled. Good thing he isn't in the food serving business. They just arrested a guy here who worked at a pizza shop for putting rat poison in the shredded cheese.

Honestly, I've never heard of anyone being taught not to except anything from ol ladies. It's always the guys you stay away from, and the image put in our heads as kids (as McFuddy was referring to), has always been "dirty old men"

I only wish to take you to the stars, perhaps visit the moon. And then, never bring you back.

I can see how you felt, but many shops would regard accepting a gift from a customer as a dissmissible offence. The rules are often very strict, not allowing cashiers to have money or anything sold at the shop on their person. Some managers are real sticklers to the rules.

Our daughter is a police officer and has similar rules. She can accept a cup of tea or coffee when visiting a victim or witness, but cannot even accept a cup of tea if the person is a suspect.

Some years ago, a friend of ours had his annual tax inspection.
At lunchtime when he made tea and sandwiches for himself and his small staff he took a cup of tea and a homemade cheese sandwich into the office for the inspector (as he had always done in the past). The guy looked horrified and told him to take them away.
Since running his business for many years and never having any discrepancies, he was quite surprised at the reaction.

A few weeks later he received a summons and had to appear in court for attempting to bribe a revenue official. When our friend explained the full situation and explained that he would have felt it highly rude to exclude someone working in his office from their lunchtime snack, the judge just laughed and told the guy from the revenue to grow up and stop wasting court time.

Stay cheerful, continue chatting to staff in your local shops to make them feel appreciated. but NEVER offer a cheese sandwich to a tax inspector. :yum::yum::yum:
