Well normally I agree with you. I wouldn't want to be the person to stand in the way of a healthy relationship.

this is a vital point I think. he's likely to come off as needy if/when he talks to the girl with the boyfriend, and might ruin a friendship because he mistakes lust for love.

the most prudent action is probably to hit the bars, play the numbers game, get laid and then see if the desire for a girlfriend is still as strong, or if it was just horniness all along.
