In Australia I can shop where I want because my wages are always high enough to have that luxury, no matter where I work. We also have great farmers markets etc. so you can buy things ethically cheaper than you can buy them from the supermarket. In England my income was abominable, If I didn't shop at ASDA (british wal-mart) I could't pay the bills, catch the bus or do anything. All the markets were overpriced and catered for rich people. I don't know what it is like in America, but I imagine that living in a small town, on a low income wouldn't leave you a lot of choice either. Bring kids into the equation and its even worse. I'm not saying its right, but I don't think everyone has cheap, free trade organic produce freely available to them.
anyway, the food at the one i go to is great, but i've been to locations before where it was just abysmal. tonight i'm roasting a chicken, the other two are freezing. filled the cavity with two quarters of a lemon, two crushed garlic cloves, a bay leaf, and two fresh basil leaves (from a friend's garden) rubbed the outside with oil, peppered it generously, put on a touch of celery seed, and generously covered it in fresh rosemary leaves (again, from a friend's garden) i've mixed up some crushed garlic, the juice of the other half of the lemon, oil, salt, and a touch of sugar. the chicken is roasting loosely covered in foil. i will remove the foil when half an hour of cooking remains and baste it with the mixture. we'll also have brown rice and some fresh green beans to eat. big feast for under 6 bucks
yeah, my pocket book makes most decisions for me. I'm in business too. Thing is, Wal-Mart is only a bargain for some items some times. They're not the end all be all for cheap prices. I can hit the local market and do way better on many items.
It sucks because if I want decently priced groceries, I have to wait until every Saturday when my dad goes to town so I can hitch a ride with him, because our grocery store here suuuuucks. It's overpriced and understocked. The one in town costs about 1/2 the price of the one here. And the Wal-Mart supercenters an hour away cost about 1/2 of that. We just never go to Amarillo and it's difficult to get cold foods and keep them cold all the way home in the summer.
I'm definitely talking about the majority of American RT'ers. Not many of us have the luxury of shopping somewhere else. Or the choices we have are just more chains that are in the end just as bad. Wal-Mart sucks, but when people rag on it here, man, you're preaching to the choir, you know?
Is Asda really like Wal-Mart? I know Wal-Mart own Asda now...but didn't they keep the original ethic of Associated Daires (Asda)...? If Asda is anything like Wal-Mart...I can't see why people would hate Wal-Mart. Edit: Stores, About Asda, Working with us, In the community • Wal-Mart Facts • Wal-Mart Sustainability http://walmartstores.com/Sustainability/ I guess they do share some of the same values.
Well I know nothing about the company but I am suspect about a shop that offers everything you could buy under one roof at ludicrously cheap prices. There is also the ethical issue of a bargain supermarket's existence in the first place, considering that smaller, local businesses simply cannot compete, and thus you have towns of people working as lackeys for an American Corporation instead of owning their own businesses. About the buying of products, the larger supermarkets in Australia keep their prices low by bullying farmers and producers with their epic buying power, as well as buying all their non-perishable goods from China and Taiwan. I think the reasons above outline why people don't like Wal-Mart. If ASDA is anything like Wal-Mart...I can see why people would hate ASDA.
I'm not quite sure Asda is a "bargain supermarket". The prices are cheap though, more likely because of their market domination. I believe they are the No. 2 retailer after Tesco. Most of the critics I have heard talk about Wal-Mart, talk about the lack of Union strengh (there isn't a Union for Wal-Mart) or/and buying most things from China (good old fashioned protectionism). Heck, this article is a mixture of the two: http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/display.article?id=8283 I kinda understand about local business' but they are a business...any store large or small is a competition, Imo. I've read though, (here) the supermarkets are apparently not doing as much to local stores as local stores would like us to believe. I guess it is very different if you live in a tiny village/town (UK or US) and up pops a huge mega supermarket. That would kinda suck to be a small retailer. How ethical is your local retailer?
what little groceries we do buy we buy at dollar general. we spend more on animal feed a month than we do food for ourselves tho..lol 44 bucks will just about cover our grocery bill for the month..
I never liked Tesco. The products weren't as good quality and the service was worse. My local retailer is a chinese grocer. I suppose they can be called ethical for buying chinese.
