Nah. Stan was an alcoholic and a bit of a gambler. Absolute legend. My dad's always preferred Rodney though. Olly on the other hand - he's about as virtuous as they come - apart from his temper perhaps -he recently got fined a grand and a half for swearing at an official up at Northampton, quite understandably in my opinion (the swearing that is, not the fine).

Go Olly!- Hey don't you all have freedom of speech over there?

Yes, but within reason. We're not like your lot who include racism, homophobia and every other ghastly opinion of nutters conceivable, under the idea of freedom of speech. Anyway, it wasn't a legal issue, it was all dealt with within the code of conduct of the game. If you break the rules you face disciplinary action.

hang on a minute. It says you're fifteen and your spelling suggests even younger, so how come you're driving?

In most U.S. states, the driving age starts at 15 when you get your permit. After you get your permit, you learn to drive with an adult who is usually at least 21 years of age. Then when you turn 16 you can get a license to drive by yourself. :)

Just curious, how are the laws in GB for driving?

Brilliant, and at what age are you responsible, legally, for your actions? 18 I presume.

To which actions are you referring to, speeding violations and the like, or just crimes in general?

Death by dangerous driving, for example.

I have to defend our 15 year old friend here. First, do you think it's fair to criticize her for spelling "driven" wrong?

Second, laws vary from state to state. In my state, a person can't be "negligent" as a matter of law under a certain age (around 7 or 8). Other than that, any person who causes death by driving is "legally responsible" for his or her actions. What other form of "responsibility" did you mean if you don't mean that?

But is some sober person driving with a permit at age 15 any more dangerous than a drunk 25 year old with a few years' experience? Same thing as: is a barefoot driver any less safe than someone driving with platform heels?

First of all, yes. At 15, one should know better, as one should at 7-8. If you can't spell, you probably haven't been reading much, which would suggest to me that you shouldn't be on the road anyway.

Secondly, why are you putting everything in inverted commas - are you suggesting that negligence and responsibility are relative? Rather dangerous ideas there!

Thirdly, why must the 25 year old be drunk and the 15 year old sober? It could just as easily be the other way round. In fact it may take the few years experience you mention to know exactly why it's not safe to drive drunk.

Heh, Sax where have you been? Don't you know that spelling and grammar don't count on the Internet anymore? Or text messaging. Or IM'ing. Or email. Or any of the ways that young people communicate nowadays. If you go around correcting everyone her age's spelling and use of the language you'll be busy 24-7 until you expire. :p

It's sad though, I'll agree with you on that.

And to clarify, while the age to drive on most states here is 16, a lot of states have also implemented programs to identify these young drivers (with a placard on the car) so that the rest of us can give them a wide berth. LOL If an underage driver is responsible for an accident, they aren't given a free pass, but their age is taken into consideration.

I'm curious too, what are the ages for young people (to vote, drive, enlist, drink, etc.) in GB?

Yep, saw that one on the bbc site the other day. And to think it was the AUSTRALIANS who came up with the idea! It was probably only some nonsensical protestant bible though so perhaps we needn't worry too much. Ages in GB, let's see.

    to vote: 18
    drive: 17
    enlist: 16
drink: Whenever (although it's illegal to sell drink to anyone under 18, but once it's in your posession they can't touch you, unless you're on licensed premises, in which case it is the responsibility of the landlord to keep you from drinking on his premises if he wants to keep his licence. You CAN however have a drink with a meal on licensed premises when you at 16. Similar with fags - you can smoke whenever you want but it's illegal for anyone to sell tobacco products to u-16s).
    shag: 16
    gamble: 16

    Have I forgotten anything?

    LOL.

You can be married with parents' consent at 16 or without it at 18.
To get into any sort of night club you usually have to be 18. That's not necessarily the law (although most of the time it is), but really it's to do with policy.

And yes, secondary school typically begins at 11, although there are lots of variations on that now with overlapping prep schools that go from 7-13 and other systems that are stranger still.
