The spiritual journey is ongoing, and you've been on it since before you could ever remember.

No matter what you decide to do, it will be there happening.

But if you really want to break away from society, I guess you could look into commune life. Just don't expect to be lazy because I'm sure wherever you go you will be expected to pull your own weight, and that's only fair. Right?

Because you often have to invest time and/or money in a job like that :p (or be really lucky)

Yeah he pretty much stomped out like a little bitch when we told him to stay in school. Didn't get the answer he wanted to hear.

Oh if only it were that easy. I consider myself a bit of a spoiled brat too with romantic ideals and disillusionment towards society, the old 'existential crisis' a daily thing for me. I feel conflicted about everything, my sense of self, college, jobs, responsibility etc.
No one dies a virgin. Life fucks us all. You can't escape the strife of a hard life. Although some can, damn them.

Man being young sucks, you feel like a god, like you claim to know everything, you have all these deluded notions and energy, but in reality, you really don't know anything and eventually grow weary as the years pass.

I feel I can relate to OP, but I know this idealism, angst etc. is fleeting and hard work and responsibility is key for any path, be it the unconventional or the conventional.

People who work night-shifts live shorter lives and have much higher rates of cancer. Right now your body is able to stay up until 3 am every night and still zombie your way through school but the truth of it is that you are a biological organism who's evolved for hundreds of millions of years around the rising of the sun; without it you wither away.

Hehehe, I remember thinking like you, feels like just a few years ago. You'll have to work either way. Even if you build your own cabin out in the woods and hunt your own food, you'll be working on that stuff all day.

It's not likely that you can "get above the system" in a big way. But in a little way, you can make intelligent, rational, ethical decisions about what kind of work you'll do, for whom. I think there's a big difference between someone working a 9-5 that excites them, fulfills them, gives them meaning and sustenance, joy and pride, versus a 9-5 for a boss you hate, for a company you can't stand, for an industry you don't think should exist. Sadly lots of people in the latter group, but there are lots in the former as well.

I laughed really hard when he said that minimum wage is more than enough to live on lol. Maybe if it was closer to 15$/hr.

We should serve ourselves and our desires, then serve others?

learn as much as you can about the world before you go out blindly and get screwed over. alot of people like to take advantage of people.

you should learn what you can in high school its basic stuff.

but its not impossible to do well without a degree. bill gates and steve jobbs never went to college.

just be careful society isnt set up for people like us yet. you wouldnt wanna tell a potential future employer that your a hippie lol. just be confident that you can do whatever they´ll need you to do and youll be more likely to get the job. sadly its very hard to live without money. it would be easier in another country. Learning how to grow fruits and veggies is also a very good way to live sustainably, and with little or no money. but thats assuming that you wont be moving around.

    good luck man

The 9-5 rat race of human's daily life is invented by humans only. The system is designed to keep you busy at a job you most likely don't like.

In the words of Charles Bukowski: “How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 8:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so? ”

    Love it.

    That kid didn't last-
If he can't last in here with our criticism, he ain't gonna last in the real world. He's gonna be bawling his whiney little ass off until some drug lord sticks a needle in his ass and he becomes the drug lord's slave. In a couple years, he'll be sitting in prison or jail somewhere. Provided his whiney ass doesn't get kil't first.

A little bit of insight for you my friend, and hopefully anyone else that is willing to approach this with an open mind.

Continue in HS. Get your diploma.
If you wanna be a musician, take music classes in HS. It's free for you there and it's a step in the right direction.
In math class you learn how to manage your books.
In english comp you learn to write so you can draft a letter to a producer and convince him/her to work with you.
In PE you stay in shape so you can outlast your fans and still get some pussy & enjoy it after the gig is over!
Different classes have different benefits, ALL of them make life an an adult a lot easier.

Listen, I know from my own experience what it's like to not have those courses and go into the real world on your own. It's a hard life. Stick it out. That worthless piece of paper saying you succeeded at sucking the school district's dick won't be so worthless later on in life when you're looking for work or going to college.

As for college, that's not so hard to do. Seriously. Pull courses part time at a community college working for your associates. You can pick any career field (generally). It'll take you a while and you may have to pay for it yourself or get a student loan. But one thing you should learn or should HAVE learned in HS is research. Research the pay scales and degree/career options. Check, double-check and triple-check the facts.

Think of it like this- you end up rooming with another guy or girl. You're working 30-40 hrs./ week and pulling another 3-5 hours a week in college. When you graduate from the CC your pay scale increases. Job availability may change, but your average starting wage will be (typically) better than minimum wage. Instead of $7.25/hr. it could be $8.50 to $10/hr. or better.

Lets' pretend you're working at McDonald's for the three years you're in school. After those three years you graduate as a certified & licensed welder. Pick up a job in the oil patch and you'll be pulling a minimum of $28/hr. and you won't be working as hard as the toolie, roughneck or floorhands. Hard work yes, but it'll be worth it.

Or maybe you'll end up with a certification in potable OR wastewater treatment. You're future is now wide open, because those two fields will always be in demand. And they are not usually labor intensive. I'd expect the starting wage to be around $10/hr., 8 hours a day 5 days a week, varying shifts. Research it.

Something that meltingminds missed. He was judging without knowing, doing little in the way of research and going solely by word of mouth from those that themselves likely have no research or experience in those areas.

The value of the human mind cannot be disregarded. And if being a hippy means being uneducated and on drugs (as it is to most of society), then ya gotta meet the old school hippies. You'll be surprised. There's politicians, musicians, lawyers, doctors, cops, ex-cons, actors & actresses, journalists, you name it. Being a hippy is a way of life, not an occupation. Ya still gotta eat and pay the rent or mortgage.

    Ok, ok. I'll shut up.

    /end rant.

I've been feeling sort of the same way. I'm really not sure what I should do in life. Sometimes I feel like I should be doing some else with my time instead of going to school, going to work and trying to please everyone else.

To the young people in this thread: believe me, you're not the only ones who get frustrated with the superficiality and monotonousness of 21st century civilization. We old folk know probably even better than you do how meaningless a lot of it is. As for the specific case of the school system ... I taught elementary school for 30 years. Trust me, nobody knows better than I do how frustrating it can be to deal with it.

So ok, we know what the problem is. Now what are your options?

One, you can do like so many on this site do ... bitch and whine endlessly about how terrible "society" is and how it's screwed you over, do drugs all day long, and basically live the exact same kind of empty life that you're bitching about. You haven't solved the problem ... you've simply contributed more to it. And you haven't prepared yourself, so you have to take whatever job you can get, and then one day you'll wake up to realize you're 45 years old with a dead-end job and a dead-end life.

Or two, you can creatively find a solution, one that feeds your fires while at the same time doesn't ignore the realities of adult life. Think that's impossible? Bullshit. Lots of people do it. Lots of people live happy lives doing what they love, contributing something to the world, and don't feel like a whore doing it.

But you gotta do your homework. Want to be a musician? Ok, somehow worm your way into the confidence of real working musicians and find out for yourself how they live. Find out what their life is like. Find out what kinds of problems they face. Find out the personal qualities you need to be able to live that life. Find out what kind of education you need, both in and out of the classroom. Find out how they managed to live before they could make it in music. And make sure you find out from real musicians ... don't take the word of somebody on an internet forum.

Substitute "artist" or "engineer" or "baker" or "Indian chief" or whatever in that paragraph. The key is finding out as much as you possibly can before you make a commitment to it. You also need to be realistic about your own capabilities. Am I truly as talented in music as I think I am? Get some opinions from people who know what the hell they're talking about. You're not bound by those opinions, but take them into consideration. You're foolish if you think you can do it all on your own.

And then don't forget that all jobs have their negative aspects, too. The trick is to find a job that you love enough that you don't mind putting up with those negative aspects. In my case, I was willing to deal with the crap bureaucracy in the education system because I loved what I was doing, and that love was enough to overcome my distaste for the crap. Any job is going to have crap. So find something that you love enough that you don't mind putting up with it.

I'm not so delusional to think that people like the OP would pay the slightest attention to a little old lady. But I speak the truth.
