I too work with children but i own my child minding/counselling centre and have for 5 years. I agree with part of what you're saying but i choose to continue advising even thought some things seem obvious, like this young guy currently not making any decisions about taking advice. I've learned to persevere even if the subject turns a blind eye. In the end it's worth it.
