If you look at windy.com what I find so interesting is that below Australia and to the west seems to be a lot more wind and they got their own hurricanes there's also a small one near south NZ. I've never heard about them once in a news but when you look at the world wind movements, they look 10x worse than what Irma does. And then Europe looks peaceful. Also one near Japan.

I seriously never knew there was that much activity in the south Pole.

I just heard that it could be a cat 2 by the time it comes up to central Florida so that won't blow the windows out. I should have a glass of wine because all these forecasts just stress me out lol I just wish we had more certainty of the track you know?

I recommend following local emergency instructions. They should be able to tell you if should evacuate, or go to a shelter, etc. There's every reason to think that their judgement is going to be better than yours (or mine).

While it's good that you're thinking of others, there may be plenty of room in a shelter.

It's good that your neighbor has storm shutters, but those will protect windows at best. A framed house can have extensive damage from a direct hit by a cat-4 hurricane, shutters or no.

Beyond that, power and water might be out for quite a while, and roads obstructed.

The storm is still more than 36 hours away from making landfall, that's actually a lot of time. I'd be surprised if it was too late for anyone to evacuate.

That's true, were you asked to evacuate and chose to stay? My area didn't mandate evacuations, but like 45 minutes away, there were mandatory evacuations lol Such fine lines, but I think it all comes down to flooding for the areas asked to leave. I want this so overrrrr!! >.<

We live in block homes, with roofs rated for 130 mph winds. Still scary even in a shelter. I'm more southwest, I really need to keep my eye on this.

Yeah, I think it's supposed to weaken quite a bit after it makes landfall.

I'd recommend not watching any of the national news casts...they'll probably not help. Local cable or other local source of official instructions will probably give you the best instructions.

Well the more the news portrays mass destruction increases mass hysteria which increase the money flow too. Don't assume they've all got your backs.

Even if evacuation is not mandatory, that doesn't mean that evacuation is not advisable. There should be a local official who can advise you on what to do.

You may want to try calling this number:

This site might be good to check out too.
    http://www.floridadisaster.org/index.asp

The emergency line should be able to give you advice about evacuating/not evacuating and storm prep.

130 is pretty good, but I think Irma is anticipated to have sustained 145mph winds when it hits the southern tip, with gusts above that.

The southwest will probably be hit pretty hard. You might want to call the emergency info line I gave above to get official advice on what to do.

Yeah they do try to hype it up for ratings, there is a local meteorologist who is really bad about it. I guesss he's competing with the other local weather guy on another channel lol. He hypes up every weather event and then ends up being dead wrong, like he's the one who got me all scared about category 1 winds here...which I know everyone was saying the path would be more eastern, not just him but he is always sure to throw in a lot of fear mongering - "folks, I cannot stress this enough, this could be catastrophic for us." He always says that, he said it about a 1000 year flood we were going to have two years ago and it only drizzled all day, he said it last year about a snowstorm and schools closed down based on his forecast and then we only got some flurries, and he said it about the hurricane that will probably completely miss us. Its kind of fun to watch him though, he gets ya good and scared and gets your adrenaline going lol

Hey Irma, you're the biggest Atlantic hurricane ever! What are you gonna do next?

I'm gonna go to Disney World!

Omg, just walked outside, a small storm came through (don't think that was hurricane related) and I just saw the most beautiful sky right now! The clouds are like a single silver sheet across the sky, and peach and gold ribbons running across, so pretty! And it's breezy. Definitely deceiving! Just going to hope for the best.

Just a rain shower then a pleasant, warm red sky just before sunset.

    Be safe.

I don't doubt that, but after seeing Harvey and the destruction Irma just did to the Caribbean, I think that has helped people take Irma more seriously. There is a weather guy in the area who a lot of women swoon over on Facebook, I'm still trying to figure that one out, but ok. lol I definitely think ratings come into play, but they seem to be right (unfortunately) with this storm.

I hear you but when you don't see any of your neighbors leaving, or coworkers, etc...you're like hmmm, maybe it's worth staying? Why aren't they leaving? I think the main reason people were evacuated was due to potential storm surges and flooding, my area is inland, but it's the wind that is the concern, too. I know this sounds really out there, but one of my main concerns is after the storm, when there's no power for a few days, it's super hot in the house, and big spiders start marching in...ugh. And palmetto bugs. In the big scheme of things, it's not a big deal, but once the storm blows over, it will consume my thinking. :blush5:
