I've got 3 families of extended family/friends that have to get out of Florida; and two families of extended family that have to get off the Georgia coast; one more friend that has to get out of Charleston.

You're in Georgia, aren't you? I take it you're not on the coast?

I hope all your loved ones make it safely.

I have one friend who made it safely in town from Florida today, I was worried about her so I'm glad she decided to evacuate

I found out my sister is flying into Charlotte Saturday, not Charleston and she then has to drive to Charleston to get her pets out of the kennel. The governor announced today he will reverse I 26 eastbound Saturday to free up more lanes for evacuees so she'll have to take back roads for part of the drive. Not sure she will evacuate back up here after all that so I hope Charleston doesnt get a direct hit

I'm also kind of worried about flooding and downed trees and what not here, it is looking like we're going to get some category 1 winds and torrential rain here. But it makes me feel like a pussy to admit I'm scared of a category 1 storm when those poor people on the islands just went through a category 5

Just get batteries for lights, gas up your car, get in food you don't need electric to cook for you and any pets, put water in gallon baggies in the freezer and refrigerator. It'll keep it cold and you'll have some drinking water.

I bet Florida's gonna really be hurting for weed in a few days. Too bad really, I kinda like Florida. On a map it looks like America's dick taking a whiz on Castro!

I remember wind gusts of 60 mph with the Blizzard of 1993. That was scary.

My trees are larger and older now.

I hope the winds are not that high. Those winds blew down mailboxes and bent stop signs in the neighborhood.

Latest NOAA model has it making a direct hit on Miami around 2pm Sunday. Winds around 130mph. Still a major hurricane, but just barely a cat-4.

Where I am in Florida, high winds might be about all the damage I will receive.

You may not have to worry about flooding if you are at high enough elevation, but high winds can still do a lot of damage.

Saw this one floating about the web, courtesy of Sanchez:

Let this sink in for a minute…..Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUVs from across the South are headed for Houston. Almost all of them driven by men. They’re using their own property, sacrificing their own time,
spending their own money, and risking their own lives for one reason: to help total strangers in desperate need. Most of them are by themselves. Most are dressed like the redneck duck hunters and bass fisherman they are. Many are veterans. Most are wearing well-used gimme-hats, t-shirts, and jeans; and there’s a preponderance of camo. Most are probably gun owners, and most probably voted for Trump.

These are the people the Left loves to hate, the ones Maddow mocks. The ones Maher and Olbermann just *know* they’re so much better than. These are The Quiet Ones. They don’t wear masks and tear down statues. They don’t, as a rule, march and demonstrate. And most have probably never been in a Whole Foods. But they’ll spend the next several days wading in cold, dirty water; dodging gators and water moccasins and fire ants; eating whatever meager rations are available; and sleeping wherever they can in dirty, damp clothes. Their reward is the tears and the hugs and the smiles from the terrified people they help. They’ll deliver one boatload, and then go back for more. When disaster strikes, it’s what men do.

Real men. Heroic men. American men. And then they’ll knock back a few shots, or a few beers with like-minded men they’ve never met before, and talk about fish, or ten-point bucks, or the benefits of hollow-point ammo, or their F-150.
And the next time they hear someone talk about “the patriarchy”, or “male privilege”, they’ll snort, turn off the TV and go to bed.
In the meantime, they’ll likely be up again before dawn. To do it again. Until the helpless are rescued. And the work’s done.
They’re unlikely to be reimbursed. There won’t be medals. They won’t care. They’re heroes. And it’s what they do.

    Eh ..saw that too

I love those men, I've always loved what we call good ol' boys around here

But I thought that ^ was just a divisive piece of crap as soon as politics were brought into it, to be honest

Why is this country so insanely political

Who cares if they voted for Trump, are we as a country not capable of seeing someone for who they are and not where they fall on the political spectrum?

And who says they voted for Trump, as if good ol' boys cant be liberal. They can.

But it doesnt matter, it just matters that they're decent people.

I personally know more of that sort who don't vote at all. So I must agree with you at the bit of politics that was so obviously slipped in was rather trite and pointless. It would be interesting to get real data on the people making these kinds of efforts. Just to know for certain.

But in today's climate I doubt it would have much impact either way. After all, look at the gripes being handed to Kid Rock!

I liked the post overall, these men should be celebrated as heroes. Just didnt like how an otherwise nice post was made political

I agree most men like this are apolitical and don't really trust the government and politicians either way

Florida is pretty flat, but maybe he meant he's on the upper floors of an apartment building.

I'm not sure why he's saying he only has to worry about high winds.

This storm is 400 miles wide first off. Second off Jose is right behind it and headed towards Bermuda. Not a great plan!

Looks like it will be just a tropical storm by the time it gets anywhere near you, and is probably headed for Georgia instead
