Meanwhile, we here in New England will get at least some impact from Hurricane Jose, mostly tomorrow into Wednesday. Tropical storm watches are up for coastal areas of Middlesex and New London counties in southern and southeast CT. Coastal flooding and erosion are a good bet from areas of eastern Massachusetts up to Maine. The last hurricane/tropical system which really impacted greater Hartford and much of CT was Sandy in October of 2012.
Hurricane Maria tracker.. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2017/sep/19/hurricane-maria-landfall-dominica-caribbean-category-five-storm-live Quote. What we know so far Hurricane Maria is heading across the Caribbean Sea as a category 5 storm towards Montserrat, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico after causing widespread damage on the island of Dominica. Winds of up to 160mph (260km/h) and heavy rains lashed Dominica as the eye of the hurricane passed directly across it late on Monday. The prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit – who had to be rescued from his flooded home – said the island had “lost all that money can buy”. He added: “My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.” There has been no official word from Dominica since Skerrit said there was widespread damage, with roofs swept from buildings. Reports said Princess Margaret hospital in Roseau, the capital, was battered and radio stations stopped broadcasting as the storm crashed over the island of 72,000 people. The storm briefly dipped to a category 4 before regaining strength to a category 5. On the forecast track, the eye of Maria will move over the north-eastern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday, and approach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and Wednesday. A curfew has been imposed on the British Virgin Islands where relief efforts from Hurricane Irma have been halted. The governor, Gus Jaspert, said debris left by Hurricane Irma was being cleared so that it did not “turn into missiles flying at buildings” during Hurricane Maria. “Our islands are extremely vulnerable right now,” prime minister Orlando Smith warned The Foreign Office is warning against travelling to the BVI, Montserrat, Anguilla and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Puerto Rico is preparing for what could be the strongest hurricane to slam the island for almost a century. The governor, Ricardo Rosselló, urged islanders to find safe shelter. “All indications are that this is going to be devastating and catastrophic,” he told CNN.
My daughter-in-law's father made it through Irma on Puerto Rico. I hope he will be fine during Maria.
Hurricane Maria takes aim at Puerto Rico as Category 5 storm with top sustained winds of 175 mph. Puerto Rico dodged a bullet with Irma but not with Maria which is expected to make a direct hit https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20170919/humboldt-park/hurricane-maria-emergency-fundraiser-humboldt-park-puerto-rico Hotwater
My sister in law's mother is in Puerto Rico, she is in a concrete house so wind isn't a concern but her house was already flooded from Irma and is getting worse Flooding has to be a really horrible thing to go through, a friend of mine in Houston has gutted his house, took out the flooring down to the slab and tore out all the dry wall
I have one friend who has heard from only part of her family in P.R. I have another friend who was vacationing there with her family and couldn't get out, but they are okay. No word from my daughter-in-law's father, brother, and other family members.
I read a story online today about a father who left his baby (purposely) outside during Hurricane Irma, and he's been arrested and charged with child abuse. http://fox59.com/2017/09/14/sheriff-toddler-left-outside-overnight-during-irma-looked-purple-father-arrested/ Who does this?? He should be charged with attempted murder.
Jose is east of me. Close enough for the cloud shield and back edge wind. Far enough for the rain shield. That's over southeast Massachusetts. I seriously worry where Maria is going next. Please not Florida again. I feel so horrible for Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico is 100% without power. https://www.************/prinforma/?hc_ref=ARRVdLb_urFqVOKuMq0cvbmlkX6vJ-PTdjyPxg_GLoTWw7xJ9mDYKU_4mCBNBcXEc0w&fref=nf
I survived Irma. It was only a category two when it reached me, which I suppose some people would still consider bad. The power did not go out during the storm, but the power company did turn off the power the next day and left it off for over a day. I was without internet/cable for the longest, however, an entire week. I was busy with life, so I am only now getting back on here to post about it.
