Ok. It would be a huge pain in the ass for me to do that. So I don't.

Who said it was an eighties thing?

I never said there was a time when humility was universal. I said there was a time when it existed.

These days, even pathetic looking old retired guys who hang out in cheap breakfast spots think they know everything about everything. Not too long ago, I stopped in one of those places on a short business trip, just because I didn't have time to find anything better. A bunch of those old farts were talking loud about world issues, and I was struggling to keep a straight face. Some of it was really funny. Somebody brought up the subject of hurricanes, and one of them said, "They could get rid of 'em, if they wanted to. All they gots to do is drop a big ol' atomic bum in the middle of it." Good thing I wasn't drinking coffee, or it would have come out my nose!

I'm referring to what VG brought up and what Oden commented on.
Perhaps I should have multi-quoted

the culture of the 80s was the mass murder of the culture of the 70s. that's when humility was slaughtered. by the return of the uggly monster of the romantacizing of aggressiveness.

Possibly miss manners took humility on sabbatical with her. Seems they both need to return.

I think I have to agree. It was reflected in the music, the aggressive turn of rock to metal. Blue turned to black

Hey... gotta get off computer in a second to do some stuff but I just saw this thread (only read the OP... not any further yet....)--- but I just wanted to comment that I can't wait to come back to this thread when I have more time to post later.. (great thread btw.. great topic...)-- looking forward to both reading people's replies and thoughts on humility and also to post my own thoughts on it. As for right this second, I will just say that humility is something that I try to practice daily- something that I am defiantly not perfect at- but that I can see a direct correlation in my life regarding how well I am remembering to practice it and how content and at peace I am with my life. :)

Humility, it is okay so long as someone displays it according to how one wants in relation to how that particular individual demands it.

Outside of that context, like most things in life, humility can screw itself.

The problem with humanity expecting particular actions and behaviors from others is that they want those actions and behaviors to coincide with how they think the actions and behaviors should promote their viewpoint.

Forget that the behavior or action is perfectly legitimate outside of the biased viewpoint. Who cares what others think, right?

My humility is directed toward those who deserve it. Those who misdirect human behavior are those who deserve to be kicked in the butt.

I know; I just can't figure out why anybody would link it to the eighties. That's all I was saying there.

Now there's a guy who knows how to whitewash more than just a fence!
    (apologies to Mark Twain)
    :leaving:

It's a great way to avoid embarrassing the hell out of yourself, since nobody knows everything. ;)

Don't you think being a know-it-all is a lot of work? :D Too much for me!

It still exists; always has and always will.
