We are just "social" animals technically. Yes, sometimes, behavior wise, yes we behave worse than animals.
I can't think of one thing that makes me better or worse than an animal other then human. All I can think of is that each animal has its own distinct properties which are just for that animals natural needs for some reason or another which other animals don't actually need. For example dogs can smell great, spiders see spacially in different lights, bugs have sticky feet, fish don't have hands and can live in water etc. We have eyes in the front of our heads and ears with a particular shape for hearing, on and on ....It makes us and them unique to the whole but not better.
But it can make us worse than them at times, if not better. That is what I think, I might be very wrong though.
I know what to expect from certain animals. I will never be sure what to expect from people. I think people are generally bad. We, or at least most of us have this advanced moral/ideological systems and motor functions which enable us to do what we do, but we fucked up everything. We should be better than animals considering our capabilities but we certainly are not. Because we have something more than other animals do.
Yes, but other animals can't make themselves things to fly/swim/walk/see in dark/play video games. Animals don't use technology and that sure is huge difference.
We don't need technology. We can create it that's great and awesome for us. It's an ability we should cherish if we find it useful. But it still doesn't make us better.
As others on this thread have stated: Humans are animals we just seem to forget it some times. I have had pets that I loved more than most humans. My pets were my best friends. I trust my own pets more than most people. There are some humans that are nastier than any animal.
You can expect from people the same as any animal, that they seek their perceived good. That we fuck up everything means that we do not know what it is we do.
I do think that humans are sometimes worse than animals. Humans have the ability to think and know complex things. We see things differently than I think any animal can. Animals are intelligent, I'm not saying that they're not, but they do not have the compassion and foresight that comes easily to us. Animals (especially those in the wild) work mostly with instincts. Someone said about their distinct properties, which enable them to better survive. That's what those properties are there for - fast running, making webs, etc - to prey, hunt, kill, survive. Even features like a herbivore having eyes at the sides of their face (rabbit, cow), to see their surroundings better, leading to more chance of spotting an 'attack', and more chance of survival. Animals can't be blamed for that, it's how nature is. It's "the circle of life". A shark eating a human, a snake eating your mouse. It's hungry, it sees food, so it eats food. The wild dog doesn't think "Oh that rabbit is so cute and fluffy, I think I'll leave it be", because it's brain doesn't work like that. There is exceptions of domesticated animals, dogs who love rabbits and kittens and etc but that's because it is DOMESTICATED and understands it will be provided food from human every ___ hours. It doesn't have to think about survival, because it's needs are taken care of. Most animals don't kill for fun, or out of boredom, or because "Look at me, I'm bigger and smarter I can kill that other animal." They don't THINK like that. Humans, in my mind, don't live off instincts. Our smell and hearing and sight and taste and everything has probably lessened greatly from the caveman days, simply because we don't really need them to survive anymore. We don't live in the wild, we live in our homes, in our cars, on the pavement, in the supermarket (purchasing plastic wrapped meat in a fridge). Humans are not constantly obsessed with survival. Or at least, we're not. If you're reading this on a computer with internet then I'm guessing you're not constantly obsessed with the idea of survival. AND on top of this, we have the ability for compassion and understanding. We know other animals (including humans) have feelings. We're apparently the only animals with the ability to both 1. contemplate death, and 2. have a sense of humour. But. We still have kids putting kittens in microwaves. We still have people burning bears feet and making them dance. We still have people organizing cock fights, and people paying for it. We still have rhinos with their horns being chopped off, left for dead. We still have animals in slaughterhouses dying which I would only imagine to be extremely painful deaths. Is any of this to do with our direct survival??? I understand we all need to eat, and I respect people's decision to eat meat. That's not the issue. My point is that with all this technology and knowledge, all the milestones we're reached, everything the human race has achieved, the idea that humans are this almighty great creature... WHY are we still treating other animals like shit? Money. Entertainment. Convienience. We have the most amazing brains, and yet our actions still come from these things. We're lazy and selfish. So.... Yes.

Lol I didn't look at the link, I don't think I'd stomach it.. But that's what I meant by the difference between domesticated and non domesticated animals. Your cat kills for fun because it doesn't have the need to kill for food. My old cat used to kill birds and mice just because he could. But cats, domesticated or not, don't have the awareness of exactly what they are doing. Animals may mutilate other animals for entertainment, but they don't have the choice of, say, going on the internet. Or getting a job. Or taking up tennis. We live in a different state of consciousness to other animals. I hate it when people use the phrases "circle of life" or "food chain" because the reason we are hunters and not prey is really only because of our minds, of the things we make and the things we do to kill other animals. On our own against a lion, tiger, or bear, we are defenseless. In saying that, I also hate it when people say "If they had the chance, they would kill us". Of course they would. They are ANIMALS reacting because of instinct. We can see that and understand that, and for that reason alone we shouldn't excuse our actions because 'we are animals too'. I read something a long time ago about testing products on animals. “Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are like us.' Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are not like us.'”—Charles R. Magel If a human picks up a gun and shoots someone, would you judge it differently whether it was a two year old or a thirty year old shooting the gun? P.S Fae this all isn't directed at you, I just get a bit passionate on this topic lol.
My thoughts are generally concerning what legacy we will leave this planet when we are gone and how long before any trace of us will vanish. I generally think: Not much. Not long.
Do you really need me to say that a vegetarian human can be just as devious and is not by definition more or less trustworthy as one who still likes it's meat?
