I read this essay once by (i think) cynthia hiymel (sp?) Anyway, it was about the use of 'guys' as referring to a group of women. She said it was basically because there is not eqiuvalent term for women - like you come into a room and say "hey guys" which is nice and casual, etc.... There is no female term which mtaches - you can have "hey women" which sounds kinda wanky; "hey ladies" - well, lady has gross connotations. Ladies are so...owned. (as the writer put) it is a term that at once puts women on a pedastool and patronises them; "Hey girls", which is even worse, ugh. If anyone over about 15 is referred to as a girl it just sounds daft...you know, let us girls go shopping with our men's credit cards, aren't we naughty. And then we come to chicks - It may be better than the others, but i still don't think it has the casual, equalising effect of "guys". So, to stop blabbering, one reason for using guys to refer to a group of anyone is out of sheer desperation.
bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch and this is why no one takes feminism seriously anymore. just another tired ism...
