Ideally, I think having more news sources is better, rather than a couple sources provide all the news.

But even if the news is not straight up fabricated, I notice alot of journalist catering to particular viewpoints in more extreme ways than mainstream media, which is where I do think things like the microagressions and language policing that the op mentions are a serious detriment to critical thought. Obviously the right pushes their own narratives as well which cater to their myopic views.

Not sure if this phenomena is because everyone wants to have their opinions validated or more that people are just too lazy to do critical analysis.

That sounds like an idea on the surface and might be good for fake news and phone zombie pedestrians.
However it's like you are forgetting a whole part of the Internet.
    Watching TV or movies
    Watching sports
    Checking weather
Selling stuff I don't need or use
    Checking local news
    Checking directions
Looking up facts to win arguments
Checking laws to know if I am breaking the law
Looking up how to videos to fix up my house or car.
Finding out which star wars character I am most like
Checking ratings on beers so I know what to buy.
Checking nutrition information on foods and drinks
Find out info on my broken wrist on WebMD
Read books (okay it's been years since I used it for that but...)
    Checking my hockey schedule
I think I could name more but I will finish with the Internet is by far the best value for the money...even if some people waste it on fake news on FB.

I think probably a mix of both. Everyone wants their opinion validated, no one wants to do any real research, particularly if the research challenges their existing viewpoint.

Anyways, you guys are right, overall the internet is awesome. Maybe if we just did away with facebook?

How do you make a list that long of the benefits of the Internet without mentioning Porn?

Tokenism. Lots of racists make exceptions for a couple of buddies. It confuses the opposition. Yiannopolous is gay but hates Muslims. Raheem Kassam is a militant atheist, not a Muslim, and his embrace of Thatcherism and Nigel Farge gives him a free pass.

I am not interested in stopping any political movement but for those who are concerned about the alt right my comment is that the only reason people are discussing the alt right is because journalists are writing stories about it. Most people weren't giving it much attention until these journalists started talking about it. If the alt right has been experiencing a growth in membership maybe some of that is due to mainstream publications writing articles on the alt right. Because realistically the alt right has been just a collection of obscure internet bloggers without any real political influence, so I am not sure why mainstream publications started writing stories on them.

There was a time in rather recent history when all forms of news and journalism posted online was dismissed as, "Anyone can post anything online. Trust corporate newspapers and televised news instead."

Now I find the tables have turned as it seems most people now realize the mainstream media is run by merely 5 different corporations with their own agendas. And people have video cameras in their pockets, and become citizen journalists to capture and broadcast real events the mainstream media might not want you to see.

The corporate MSM feels threatened by this, with the public's trust in them is now at 6%, they are desperate to go back to the old days and say all internet based news media is fake news.

Oh I see. Kinda like how black lives matter makes exceptions for pretend-black white boys like Shaun King?

Not sure what kind of racist white nationalist makes exceptions by hiring a staff full of Jews and a few minorities though.

I don't think that at all. As I stated in my op that opponents of the alt-right keep on with the petty name calling. Most of it is painting everyone who disagrees with them with the same brush as racists. The race card used to work so well and effectively, especially from the left. Now it's been overplayed. Being called and wrongly labeled a racist without any concrete evidence used to be life destroying. Now nobody takes it seriously anymore. It is making the left look pathetic and the alt right stronger.

I agree that with the election of Trump racism has gone mainstream, we are being taken back to the attitudes that prevailed in the fifties and earlier.

Or are you of the opinion that there is no more racism in the U.S.?

The oldest rule of humanity I'm afraid. If you can't defend your land, someone will take it. It's basically how every nation was formed.

I have to agree with you. I watched Milo rise very quickly with what I assumed at first to be a comedy act. But, like Die Antwoord, I was dreadfully wrong. As plants go Milo is so obvious, he should be watered. He's as obvious as Fiorina who was clearly on the stage to directly combat any claims of GOP sexism (what sex is she again). Trump has been manipulating tokens for decades, but then, so have the Clintons.

And some bad ones unfortuately. Michael Brown pops into mind immediately.
There were 1 or 2 others that much more warranted protests than he did.

And because of this skewed view of reality we know the names of an array of thugs, criminals and gang members, artificially elevated to hero status. At the same time nobody can name the victims of Dylan Roof. Why? Because Roof's victims paved the way for an attack on the confederate flag. The flag took center stage while the victims of a psychopath were forgotten. THAT is how marxism works folks. Textbook with a side of Alinsky.
