im looking for whats the best way to set up skype to run all traffic through tor on localhost ? this would be skype in linux, im guessing theres a file that i would need to edit a few lines in for the network settings ? thx to anyone who replies :sunny:
afaik TOR does not support UDP so i guess your hope of torifying skype is pretty much doomed from the beginning...
Damn, so I guess the only way to be anonymous on Skype is to connect to an "anonymous" public network or private network that doesn't belong to me
Why bother?? Microsoft will still be able to spy on you so why do you care? Skype is NO GOOD since they bought it!!!
LOL, i've read Microsoft's TOS thru and thru and I agree that it looks pretty scary tho I can't remember exactly what it said except it pretty much says that they can do w/e they want to your system at any time if they feel like it. At least that's the way I read it ...I wasn't planning on doing this w/ a MS operating system tho, rather Linux... and I think they would have a hard time w/ the encryption on my Linux system but it looks like this isn't even doable, I wasn't even thinking about UDP protocol I guess its best to stick to something like ICQ or AIM for that sort of thing.
Specifically it is possible to use UDP as a layer two, and you can tunnel about anything tjrpugh anything. Even TCP over DNS. By default skype uses methods to detect the IP behindNAT, so by default your IP is leaking. You could design software to defeat this, but even after that skype uses weak md4 encryption, as such even with the anonymity network working as anticipated, messages can still be watermarked. Pushing it through Socks is a better solution, but the weak cryptography will present the same problem after it leaves the proxy. Like you said, pretty much doomed from the start.
if you run the Tor Browser, can't you just sign in to outlook.com email and use skype on the web page? would that work?
I haven't been interested in seriously doing this in a while, the only reason I would is just to see if I could get it to work that way but from what I gather it could be tricky to get it right to where it would really be safe. Seems like doing so might be a little tedious and probably best done by writing a script that does the config. Skype seems to have its own issues already *cough* pulseaudio *cough*
