How To Make Natural Washing Powder

Does somebody knows an alternative to industrial washing powder? Is it possible to make some with ashes?

 

I remember learning that charcoal was a really good cleaning agent. But every time I had some, my hands were black. My face was black. The floor was black. The walls were black and then I can remember my mum having to clean all that up with soap!
