Very true. It's mostly about getting the equipment and precursor not your ability to do it. Hell it's possible to manufacture it with over the counter migran meds. Not in a large amount but I have heard of it being done by people who just want a personal stash and do not plan to traffic it. But a university lab often has all sorts of things laying around and they are supposed to be there because of the various things being studied. If you are in position of authority over the lab like many professors are it's not too hard to find some personal time to cook.

There are various ways to make acids, and there are quite a few acids, including water.

You can make nitric acid using copper, ammonium nitrate, HCl and H2SO4. The copper is consumed turning the solution blue and releases a brown gas which when bubbled through water produces nitric acid. Since the copper is dissolved by the acid and copper is somewhat expensive it is cheaper to just use pre 1980 pennies as the copper source, though nickels and other coins will work since they contain copper as well but this is more expensive. It would be ridiculously uneconomical to go out and actually buy copper though ... the amount of copper in old pennies is worth a lot more than a 1 cent.
