i am 17 years however i really feel like i don't fit in. not that i don't like the modern world its just am more into older music from the 60s 70s 80s 90s not modern. How do i change to be more up to date with trends and music ? any body got advice
Thats crazy I was the same way when I was 17, only music I ever listened to was classic rock, obsessed with the Beatles, long hair dressed like I was straight out of the 60's, smoked weed. My advice is cut your hair if its long. Maybe dress more like a "hipster." Idk just try and be yourself. I wish I could help you more than that. Only advice is don't smoke weed till college and start meditating a little each day if you really want to get in touch with reality. These are the things I would tell my 17 year old self at least. Life is a journey not a destination. Don't expect it ever to make sense and make the most of your years, try and be as social as possible and go out on dates and stuff while your still young. Trying to stand out for the sake of being different is overrated and can get lonely.
Try to find some modern music that isn't mainstream... You might like something there. Or, just don't worry about it and listen to what you like.
Lots of good music is still being made, it's simply not in your face. Some of the more "indie" music being made today is just as good as the music that was put out 30-50 years ago.
You could try listening to NPR in the evening. They play all sorts of different stuff including newer music from artists I've never even heard of. That's actually where I discovered Tame Impala. You should check them out.
college radio stations can be good too, if there's one in the area. they can also be pretty bad, it's kind of hit or miss.
Good point. You just reminded me that back in college a good friend of mine had a local show. It was mostly hippie-type music but once in a while I got to go in the studio with him and pick out Grateful Dead live stuff that we would play. I was on the air myself a few times but doing a radio show is surprisingly dull from the other side of the microphone unless people are calling in, etc. It feels like you're just talking to nobody.
Current mainstream 'culture' sucks in my opinion so not sure that would even be a satisfying route. There is newer music that sounds a lot like some of that old music you refer to. I'd say certainly be more up to date on current music, but stay away from the top 40 radio crap...use the internet to find good music, last.fm is a good site where you can type in a genre or band and it will play simular stuff I have found lots and lots of new music I never even knew of even two years ago on there. Or if you listen to music on youtube look at the recommended videos and such it gives you based on the stuff you already like. Not really sure what current trends are per say....I don't even have a t.v with channels and try to stay away from mainstream/consumerism culture of course I buy stuff I need and want but for instance I see no reason to participate in rushing around like a crazed lunatic on black friday for the dealz. This probably was not too helpful unless you are interested in finding good new music..rather than just listening to the popular stuff so you can still be more up to date but listen to good stuff if that makes sense.
To me it seems like a lot of today's music is very un-original. Rock music in particular is a genre that I think is used up. So if that's what you're into you maybe better off listening to older stuff. I don't know how you feel about electronic music - but that's about the only current stuff I really like these days.
Nothing wrong with liking older music, OP. As you get older, it will matter a lot less what type of music you like and whether or not you "fit in". For now, don't worry about it too much. You'll find others who enjoy the same stuff that you do.
I can say that I felt a similar way for a long time OP. The only thing that got me moving to more modern music was concerts. As much as I would love to see Jefferson Airplane play live, that's just not possible, and perhaps a tad bit depressing if they did get together today You as the listener feel like a certain era was the best for music, well many musicians feel like that same era is the best too. In the 80s when everybody was doing some weird ass synth board patch, the smiths come out playing just some classic 60s/70s rock and brought a huge following with them. They're one of my all-time favorite bands, and they were never "modern"for their time. I'm not gonna recommend you bands, I'm gonna challenge you to find your own, you think it would be cool to see led zeppelin live? Well imagine you had got to see them before they were even famous. Now pretend that the next led zeppelin is out there right now, in your hometown playing for five bucks. That's what inspires me -- Keep your tastes with you though man, what's important is finding the sound that makes you happy, follow that and what else could go wrong?
