It`s never changed. Being a hippy is the same as it was before, unless you`re a poser.

We should be thankful to god for everything that we have got. But instead of doing so most of us fret over what we don't have. We all should take positive effort to make the earth the best place to live.

Just a few few basics in this era- -
    A strong will*
Courage to be unique and different*
    Passive nature*
    Love*
    Passion for Peace*

Please note that authority figures may not look kindly on hippie types especially young ones. Use caution-

Hippies were NOT a failed social revolution. The streets may have been flooded with naked young people high on drugs, and there are plenty of things that the mainstream hippie pop culture was off about and there was a whole lot of society at large that created it in the making (ie draft dodge putting people on the road, unity of purpose and discovered through civil rights/women's rights etc)

I'm certain that whether or not you love the smell of hippies, it was a critical (if not fleeting) social era that I wouldn't want to trade in for a different slice of history.

The 80s brought in a lasting push for indulgent consumerism and young republicanism that is still doing it's dirty work on the world (along with the coke)

    So, you weren't there, huh?

The common cause that united the movement was the draft and the Vietnam war, so when those things ended the movement splintered. Those whose motivation for involvement in the movement was pure self interest went on pursuing their own selfish interests, while others went on to champion other causes such as environmentalism, feminism, civil rights, No Nukes, et cetera. This, by the way, is why the federal government is really afraid to reinstate the draft -- they know that to do so while the leaders of the 1960's and 1970's are still alive and able would be to reinstate the movement, potentially undoing nearly four decades of establishing a fascist state.

If you don't suspect that they're diligently working to establish a fascist state, just read over the Executive Order that Mister Oh-blah-blah signed ten days ago. But I digress.

Back to the original topic: Being a hippie means different things to different people, but at the core of the matter is the fact that the great majority irrationally distrusts any who dare to reject societal pressure to conform. You're just going to have to learn to deal with that, and there's no one secret to it. I find it easiest in my life to just do my own thing quietly and peacefully, avoiding potentially volatile topics here in my ultra-conservative small town because it's the only wise choice. I won't be allowed to win any debates so I don't join them -- but I help people out with organic solutions to their gardening problems, share my love of cooking with those who are trying to learn, and so on. I might be a longhaired freaky kinda guy, but I am also pretty handy to have around and try to be pleasant to talk to. It works for me.

A dozen years ago I was the only longhair in town, but today there are several older guys like me flying freak flags. It gives me hope.

Not to totally derail this thread, but that Executive Order that you are trying to blame Obama for... It's a re-write of one that has already been in effect. All that changed were some instances where it said FEMA but the DHS now handles those jobs. Nothing new here, don't believe me look it up.

Back to our regularly scheduled thread...

With apologies to all for the mini-hijack: I found it deeply disturbing when Bill Clinton signed the original, too.

    Yep.

Dragging us back onto the original topic:

Therein lies the rub, doesn't it? COINTELPRO is back and it's stronger than ever. It's been legitimized. If there's a second Church Commission in our future it's a long, long way out and we freaky people have every reason in the world to be concerned. In the meantime, the tasmanian devil pigs are infiltrating our kitchen klatsches and their virtual equivalents, recording every word so they can be taken out of context when it suits their purposes at some future date.

My ole lady likes to say that "They've taken Orwell's writings not as ominous warnings but as training manuals". WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. We enlightened brothers and sisters in humanity bump up against this crap every day and look at it, astonished, hoping to maintain disbelief but knowing deep inside that our fellow citizens are already convinced that if we don't fight them there we'll have to fight them here, that liberals hate America, and that we have to trust that the President knows what he's into.

'Scuse me while I crank up Chicago's Dialogue and contemplate how far we haven't gone.

I don't know why drugs need to be part of a revolution, isn't the hippie revolution supposed to be about love?

I don't think people choose to be a 'hippie'. I think people choose to express themselves outwardly as a hippie, such as how you dress, etc. I feel as if being a hippie comes from the heart. Anybody who loves unconditionally, creates things from the soul, appreciate nature, appreciate beauty, shows empathy towards others, has a dim ego, etc.. is a hippie. It comes with maturity, understanding, and happiness.

I agree; the way to be a hippie is: if you fit the description above, just be who and what you are without fear of what people will say or think. Don't hesitate to make paradigm-challenging statements.

I've been wondering. Ever since the 1950s and the conformity that really blossomed during that time.. is it still around today? Are there really people who still just want to be liked and don't appreciate their individuality, with all the flashy colors I can't tell.

Being hippie is your mindset not your clothing choice or fiend for drugs. Respect who respects you, want what you have, be happy and thankful. That's what I believe being a hippie is.

Me neither, but if they were, I would much rather they be LSD and weed than speed and cocaine.

This, along with other posts similarly themed, pretty much nails it.

IMO, it is pointless to try and conform to labels. I know that sounds really lame and cliche, but.. don't worry about "being a hippie" and just try to be a good human being. That's really all the hippie movement was about; love, and love is the only thing we need to revolutionize the world. (Some LSD also wouldn't hurt.)
