So, you wanna be a Hippie... Join the Serria club or Al gores outfit Ride a Scooter or bicycle instead of a Redneck truck Recycle/reuse. Use a shopping basket instead of plastic bags. Get involved with local causes Wear a peace sign Support mom and pop buisnesses over Corporate Congomerates. Thats a few things you can do off the top of my head..
Listen to your own inner-sense. Think for yourself, and think about everyone else. Know and realise that you are the divine incarnate.
not care too much about material posessions, try and be happy with what you have, and make other people happy just because you can
Get outdoors, talk to your neighbors, re-build your community. Love the earth and all creation. Eat local grown food, home school your children, seek alternative media. Walk around barefoot, grow your hair, think outside the "box"! Our lives are an example to everyone, accept and invite everyone's perspective as valuable in augmenting your own objective vision. We are all part of the same creation, of God. It is time to take responsibility for what has happened and help foster change.
I find that a lot of these suggestions are not so much ways to be hippie as they are general recommendations to improve society as we know it. That says a lot about what it means to be "A Hippie"
Fuck hippies. The whole hippie thing is just a marketing ploy from way back when. Kind of like Grunge, gangster, scene, disco and all that other shit. Don't let your ego define who you are and seperate you from your humanity.
Theres a reason hippies grew up and abandoned the lifestyle. It simply did not work. Your gonna have to be a part of the system and travel long the road to the middle. Hippies, as your imagining, lived off of others and only help those who COULD help themselves. You want to help the world? Feed the hungry, travel to other less-fortunate countries and help them, save the enviorment. Most important, be happy for what you have. You don't HAVE to wear hemp clothing, drop acid, and have promiscuous sex to be a hippy
Problem is - I find, that having conviction of conscience means living in a degree of isolation - "Fool on the Hill" indeed (or maybe it's just me)
Gandhi put it simply and succinctly: "Be the change you want to see in the world." Be the kind of person YOU most respect, and spend time developing all facets of your character and moral code. Live it, despite how others are choosing to live their lives.
This is a great forum because i find myself wondering how my three roommates content themselves with media, and not just any media but trash media that is not going to do any good to them. I try to think of it as it brings them pleasure so therefore happiness?! But trashy shows and this facebook thing, they dont benefit us. like baz luhrman said "do not read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly." That's what i think that most media does to our society--self-conscious, and lost of who we really are. Accept your body how it is because it the most beautiful thing we truly own so take care of it and love it just as much as we love other beings.
I'd rather be ridiculed than beaten up doing the right thing? sounds controversial well, some people will respect you
this and this unless you genuinly like to dress like they did back then and mooch off of other peoples drugs
In my opinion, being a hippie isn't so much how you dress, but what you believe. you can wear what you want, but believe something completely different. if people ridicule you for you, then they are close-minded and need to visit life outside of themselves. I believe in freedom of expression, religion, and personality, but i don't do drugs, or dress in tie-dye. just be you. if you're a hippie, it'll express itself. eace:
I must say that I have only read this original post and not the replies, but I feel the need to answer directly. WE DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT IT. Just follow your heart and your path and stay true to the Hippie lifestyle. Hippies don't care about what others think of our lifestyle. After all, ours is the right choice... for us. Educate the mainstream sheep! People CAN relearn to spend less time worrying about other peoples' lives!
(Admitting I still haven't read any of the other replies...) BUT I was just thinking about my personal situation and what I believe is a big reason that I am not be a sheep and maintain my hippiness... The majority of television and movies I watch are recorded or on demand, so I'm not exposed to anywhere close to the amount of advertising that the average tv viewer gets to see! I have no clue when it comes to a lot of things that are discussed when it comes to pop culture (within the last 5 years or so, I'd say). I am very particular to the news I expose myself to online, on tv and on the radio. Most of my purchases are based on what I like, which I often learn is "not in style" at the time when someone makes a rude comment. Why would I want to be wearing the same things everyone else is? Same thing comes to my hair. It seems that most women and girls I know all color and straighten their hair and wear it long. The ones who wear it short all have highlights and funky "modern" cuts. I wear my hair long and curly. If I were to go back to short, it would Sinead O'Conner style, which is something I DID do in my 20s! Being a hippie is basically being YOU, based on what YOU like to eat, wear, do, etc. There are only a few exceptions to my thought that there are no "RULES" for being a hippie: You HAVE to love music. Doesn't have to be folk or classic rock or music from the 60s or the 70s, although most hippies DO prefer that music, naturally. You HAVE to be concerned about the planet, the welfare of all living creatures, and you have to respect mother nature. You must let go of the need to "fit in" with anyone. That's something I believe almost everyone struggles with, especially those who are often heard saying that they really don't care what people think about them. They usually DO care and are struggling with that. (I'm one of those people and for me, it's an issue of insecurity.) I'm sure there are a few more, but that's what comes to mind. Hippies are NOT people who think they have to wear tie-dye clothing and listen to a particular type of music. Those are wanna-be hippies who MIGHT be hippies at heart and are using those methods to start their journey, or they just want an excuse to smoke, lol. Those are my thoughts.
