Disco has a natural Latin beat to it, so it’s no surprise that while it may have died here in America, it’s still going strong south of the border.
The closer you get to anywhere in the world on the equator, the more they dance and strut. The weather allows for regular crowds of thousands to start partying whenever they feel like it.
Anyone remember using the term “two forty” to denote someone going very fast? It was a common term among older people in Eastern Wisconsin in the middle of the 20th century. As in “he drove his Chevy two forty over to Oshkosh”
when you've reached a certain age, you're living in what was science fiction most of you life. so if you haven't reached that age yet, think about what you're writing that you think is merely light fiction and entertainment; there's a pretty good chance, in fewer years then you expect, you'll find yourself living in at least some parts of it. we don't predict the future, instead, in everything we do, we participate statistically, in however small a way, in creating it. now there's a lot of things that haven't panned out, because culture plays a bigger role then technology. lots of technologies exist, many of them having existed most of our lives, that have never been put to their best possible or most logical uses, simply because our cultural priorities have been in other more short sighted directions, then doing so. ok we don't have flying cars, at least not for everybody, but we do have, you can practically buy them at your nearest hardware store, hundreds if not thousands of technologies that were going to completely change the future, which haven't. but then of course, we have others, no one thought they would, which have. computers communicating with each other over ham or c.b. radio was a great idea, back in the 8-bit days. anybody remember that? today we have cell phones, which we supposedly own, but pay through the nose for the use of, maybe not nearly quite so great of an idea. and of course you know what made not so great of an idea? yah, "monetization", some explative figuring out how to pull a buck out of an idea at the expense of everyone else. that the people who think of how to 'monetize' things are seldom themselves to actually bennifit from doing so, this is one of those things, life goes on, and you just shake your head. of course there are costs to be covered, but srsly, does anyone really buy that as the real reason, when they're a tiny fraction of revinues generated and circulated which are justified by them?
i was alive then, but never lived in that part of the country, so no, but it does make me wonder if douglas adams ever did, or visited there, or knew someone from there?
These times have changed since my young life, I never thought I'd see the day, there's houses in the corn field 'round a fallen down barn and your dirt road was paved..
Washington was offered the chance to become king and, in turning it down, became so famous that other countries still celebrate his birthday.
The US is already transforming into one of the most nepotistic countries in the world, which would make it more like ancient Rome, where the royals assassinated each other by the dozens, and a large percentage of the population was always kept on the dole, just in case they suddenly need more foot soldiers.
