My new fur baby is a purebred Rat Terrier. The owner didn't want him and my suspicions are because he isn't show dog quality. I kept him out of the pound.

My cousin found a litter of kittens in the warehouse at her work. The mommy cat died. She cared for the kittens and gave one of them to me. My dog was given to me by a breeder. She wanted the father, but didn't want the puppies. She couldn't sell my fur baby, so we gave him a home. My husband and I did buy our parrot and spent $800. Incidentally, does anyone know of any bird rescues? I'd love to adopt a yellow and gold Mccaw.

I couldn't agree with you more!! I'm taking my new baby to get his shots next week. After we get his shots, I'm going to get him neutered. I did read that dog and cats that have been spayed/neutered are less likely to get cancer. Is this true?

I got my cat from a shelter and I think she cost about $25... which was actually a bargain because she had updated shots and was already spayed!

I've spent as much as $800 on a show puppy (american eskimo.)

I've spent up to 10k on a horse though on more than one occasion.

My puppy was free with the exception of the cost for my mom to fly to Las Vegas from Atlanta and back to get her. My uncle never had kids so his dogs are like his children, and while he was originally breeding them (it's a really rare breed- Alapaha bulldogs- only a few hundred of them left), he decided to fix them. Before he had a chance to do that, they had some love puppies which he gave away. We got one of them and she's an absolute doll and I would pay any expense for her (and we have, she's allergic to everything.. poor pup).

He was selling the puppies previously for upwards of $2,000 though... which seems kind of nuts for me.

My pitbull was free! My stepbrothers dogs had puppies about 2 years ago.
Both my cats were very cheap as in buying them, we adopted them from shelters. As for getting their shots and everything, that was a little more expensive but not too bad:) they were worth it.

I adopted my dog from a shelter for $250. I knew before I got her that she was going to cost more than that though, she was one sick little puppy. The shelter had rescued her from another shelter halfway across the country and they helped alot, but she still had over $400 in vet bills after coming home with me. When I saw her little face though, I knew I had to help her and the money means nothing compared to the bond we share.
All my other animals were free, either rescues or animals that my stupid friends didn't feel like taking care of anymore, so technically they would be concidered rescues as well..

My Ruby was free. Plus they gave us a huge bag of food, and a 12 pack of canned dog food, plus her crate (a big one) and a bunch of toys, some snacks, a huge tub of peanut butter, her Frontline, and her heartworm pills, a brush and a basket to keep all of her stuff in, and the elizabethan cone for her head cause she was just fixed. She had all of her shots too. Oh yeah and she came with 2 leashes and a collar (she ate the collar though). And they drove her 100 miles up to my house.

Let's just say they were really trying to get rid of her. I can't imagine why -- she is the best dog in the whole wide world and I love her so much. They were cat people though and Ruby doesn't like cats very much. Good thing I don't like cats either. :) hehehe. She was a little on the hyper side when we first got her but she still had a lot of puppy in her. She is almost 2 now and she has calmed down a lot. I also think it has to do with the fact that she has a huge house and a huge yard now. I guess they just didn't know how to care for her. Good thing I do.

Most of our pets didn't cost...

Merlyn the cat was from another cat we had, she was a stray that my little sisters brought home, got pregnant from another stray, and we ended up with three amazing little kittens. Unfortunately, we gave the other two away.

Flake the cat ("the bitch") was from an older guy that my husband works with, she's his daughter's cat, he's allergic to cats and his daughter couldn't take her when he moved. We took her in, and told them that if his daughter moves somewhere and is able to have a cat, she's free to take her back... we know what it's like to move and lose a pet.

Kodos the dog is bullmastiff, rottweiler, boxer and lab. The mom was a purebred bullmastiff and they were planning on breeding her, but she got pregnant with a mutt (rottweiler, boxer and lab) so we got him as one of those "free puppies" kinda deals. They were asking $100 a pup because of the breed (and a lot of people around here, including myself, love mixed breeds) but we knew the girl that babysat for them, so we ended up getting him for free.

We also have two tarantulas, and I paid for them. One was $35 as a juvinile, the other was $15 as a spiderling - same species.
