ultimately when it comes to relaying information the responsiblity is upon us to check our own sources. no one can do anything about "should". your friend did not check his/her sources. the marine who posted the original email that started the rumor didn't check his. there is nothing you can do about that. but you do have the power and responsibility to check your own sources before carrying on a rumor like that. not only does it have the ultimate result of spreading hatred and falsehood (and i do understand clearly that was NOT your intent at all) it also harms legitimate boycotts by damaging their credibility through association, and weakens the power of consumer activists in any cause.

thank you for the concern, but please check sources.

myself, i'm on the fence regarding starbucks.

they do pose a threat to small idependent coffee shops (several of which are owned/managed by close friends of mine, locally.) their products are loaded with sugar, fat, and i don't have information on their stand regarding hormone-free dairy products. they offer sugar-free products but with little readily available information on the specific artificial sweetners used, so consumers have no easy way of knowing whether or not their getting something like aspartame in their flavor syrup or baked good. ditto for their use of artificial flavors, although saidly, this complaint can be made anywhere, even in my friends' indy coffee houses, despite their best efforts to keep their offerings all-natural.

but as corporations go, they do attempt to have responsible policies. although usually not fair-trade certified, they do have more-or-less fair-trade policies in place for obtaining their coffee. they take very good care of their employees (several of which are my friends, locally). and their charity policies always put their money back into the neighborhoods where their stores are, so they maintain a local connection that is conscious and vital, which is one of the worst neighborhood-damaging problems with other big corporate chains, which maintain a physical presence in a neighborhood, but not an economic or conscious one, instead becoming a big ugly black hole into which local dollars are sucked.

(they also have orange mocha, which, admittedly, is at least less expensive and perhaps slightly healthier than crack. )

incidentally, it's starbucks neighborhood-supporting policy that would be the reason why they could not directly donate coffee to soldiers, not any particular sentiment about the war. however, starbucks' employees get a free pound of coffee every month, and many of them choose to donate that coffee to military families or other charities. they do have a system in place to facilitate starbucks employees donations of coffee to the military, but the donations are actually made by the employees, not by the company itself, because the company's charitable efforts are concentrated in local neighborhoods to maintain that vital connection, by company policy, which i happen to think is a rather smart one.

had such a request for donated coffee actually come to starbucks from a soldier, they would have been referred to one of the employee donation programs. since, as noted in the article, neither starbucks nor the soldier who passed the story on to the marine who started the email, has any record of such a request actually being made, it is reasonable to conclude it to be a malicious fabrication, which harms starbucks, anti-war activists, and soldiers alike, because it makes everyone look like assholes.

i wouldn't want to be part of such a shame-chain even inadvertently, (and i admit, like everyone, i slip up too) and i'm sure you wouldn't either, so please, check facts before posting about something as important as a boycott.

Are all your clothes hand made? I mean honeslty do you think the clothes you buy from the Gap or any store of that nature isn't made by a child? I mean.... that is a form of child abuse in a sense. And who would honestly support out right child abuse other then the abuser?

    People make me laugh.

Youd be surprised who supports child abuse

As for clothes, why do you assume i buy "from the Gap store or stores of that nature" so quickly? I actualy DO make clothes, and i try to buy second hand or get nice hand-me-downs as often as possible, and i also try my very best to avoid stores which i have heard use slave or child labour. So no Gap for me

My point in making the post was that actually keeping quiet is a form of support. I dont keep quiet. But youre right about the stores. Which would be why i dont shop there

    People make ME laugh

I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart or Starbucks. I try to buy vegan clothing and clothes that are made in either America or Europe (which is where I'm from), so I guess you could say I don't support animal based clothing or clothing made in sweatshop conditions.

    LOL@Fitzy....

I also don't support bad beer ... on that same level, I typically don't support bad food either or anything crappy to put into my body.....

I don't support the government. I don't support the war. I'm not saying whether or not I "support the troops" :leaving:

I'll eat fast food now and then but that is very very rare and honestly, I don't have a problem with starbucks- tonight I got six free shots of espresso there... what can I say? I don't even see it as that overpriced. I do NOT support SprawlMart though.....

I don't support people who spread hate, lies and intolerance.
