Hippies will NEVER die,GLEN..it's a state of mind..between our own 2 ears.. there is too much confusion about the word HIPPIE...as much as there is in the words..PEACE..WAR..RACISM..POLITICS..POWER..CONSUMER SOCIETY
I am a corporate stooge for the military industrial complex and dress in khakis and button downs every day but am a hippie in my heart. For example I am writing this in my hotel room here in Kathmandu, Nepal where I am on vacation trekking the himalayas and smoking hella cheap quality hash and munching shrooms. I cling to my job because I don't want to waste my life living in a tent outside of some shitty town making shitty jewelry and never doing anything worth while with my life. I really don't like true hippies...... They are usually idealistic losers that have given up on doing anything worth while with their lives IMO. Sure I work too much and feel like I never have time for the things I want to do but I live like a hippie and save and invest .60 of every dollar I earn and already own my own buffalo / goat farm in the Philippines and just this past year planted two hectares of coconut/ lemon/ avocado and calamari plantation that will earn for me in a few years and keep me in all the guacamole and piƱa coladas I could ever want. I'd rather be a 50 year old hippie who owns his own land that earns him money and can lay in his hammock smoking up and reading a book all day then one of those 60 year old hippies that is still working a shitty part time job for someone half his age and owns nothing. We all know people like that..... Their life's are a constant struggle.
grainpsilo, it sounds like you have a condescending attitude toward hippies who have idealistic and non-material priorities. let each one choose their own path nameste
I've been called a hippie by two separate people in the last month. They meant it in a nice way and I quite enjoyed it.
I've been called a hippie a lot... With my beard and my round glasses, people even refer to me as "John Lennon", although pretty certainly I'm not! I don't know... I think, in certain ways I am a hippie, and in certain ways I'm definitely not. It depends...
Because I like to grow my hair longer than is deemed acceptable by corporate America, I have been known as a hippie. I am not, however.
I do still think of myself as a hippie. Most of my political opinions and lifestyle decisions were made during the early 70's (I was a little too young to be a hippie in the actual 60's -- but I think of the 60's as 1964 - 1974). Sure, I changed a little since then, mostly from being a parent, but nothing changed my core values and my idealism. Life is still very much about sex, drugs, and rock n roll and love and peace. I still smoke dope as much as ever. My sex life is better now than ever before. In addition to listening to a lot of rock and folk/rock, I now play some of it myself, on mandolin and guitar. The main way I've changed is that I've gotten a lot more cynical about our capacity to change. The problems of the 70's -- energy, population, pollution, endless wars -- we've made almost no progress on them due to political corruption, corporate influence, and general apathy and despair.
i can't remember if I've already replied to this thread... anywho. People have always called me a hippie chick, more so when I had long hair though. I don't think I'm really a stereotypical hippie, whatever that means, but I do put off a free-spirited vibe I guess
I am myself. I stand up for what I believe in. I flow with the journey of life, love, and peace.. and stay high while doin it.
