I have checking accounts in five banks and five credit unions. Additionally, I pump money into two different savings accounts and two different mutual funds accounts.
Each bank and credit union offers at least one thing that seemed attractive to me at the time. Many of these accounts have been with me for a while and long term credit is listed as a good thing.
I don't know of any institutions that resonate with my hippie or tribal chords. There have been gay credit unions that have come and gone. A pagan credit union has been in the brewing since 2018.
I like banking locally and supporting organizations that speak to me, my needs, my concerns, and my love of the planet. Any suggestions?

pretty much its soverign against anxiety over rent/shelter/housing.

if i lived in a country where it was free to build and live in your own shelter without having to own land or for a rural sole resident builder to meet building code requirements this would not be the thing that it is.

i feel safer with my atm (debit card) in my pocket when i walk out the door, along with my keys to get back in and my bus pass to get me to the store and back.

as for its investment policies and priorities, at least they're mostly not of a sort to make me cringe, and i know banks that would, but its also a big and very old bank, which while this isn't all i would like, as with the op, it has always been there for me when i've travelled and each time i've relocated.

It's a necessary evil. I have no delusions about any bank giving the slightest shit about me, or the human race, or the planet. Filthy rich executives living their snooty ass high life off the literal blood and sweat of the working poor. With their ridiculous interest rates and fees up the ying yang. Oh you have some money? Let them talk you into investing in a 'market value' GIC that will generate zip squat while they rake in 15 billion in profits. What a joke. You find a bank that you think actually gives a fuck, I've got a big case of Liquid Death to sell you. Oh yeah, the aluminum is melted down through the power of baby dreams and I can ship it right to your door with magical green flying unicorns!

I still maintain 5 credit union accounts. They serve different purposes. The one closest to where I work credits incoming deposit checks immediately and they don't clear for about 2 days. Another has a high interest holiday club account. One is affiliated with my union. Shop around. I'm sure you'll find one that's right for you :)

I am one of those people who use a few different banks and a credit union. Years ago , Many years ago. I was getting other peoples canceled ( processed ) checks mixed in with my own checks for about two months. Then all of a sudden I was receiving overdraft notices. I started to add up all of the checks that were not mine and the numbers matched the overdraft amounts. Yeah the bank screwed up big time. When I showed them what happened the froze my account. And it took me roughly two months to settle everything and get my funds returned. I was struck.with no funds. My bills were piling up. A few were late. I was stressed out for weeks. The bank wanted to charge all of the owners of the other checks and then put the money in my account as they received the funds.
That is when I lost it. My anger flared up in the middle of the bank lobby . people were watching me. And I very loudly said that the screw up was the banks fault. Not mine and you are going to play games and penalize me for you screw up . That is not how it works !!! Luckly for me I had the foresight to make copies of all of those checks along with my own checks to back up my complaint .The bank manager came out of his upstairs office to find out what was going on. I very calmly explained everything. Showing him my copies of all of the paper work . He took me into his office. Called a few people on the phone and within 20 minutes all of the funds were returned into my account. Late fees were dropped. My pass due bills were called by the bank manager and he explained what happened. So I got a grace period on that. When I told him that I wanted to close my savings and checking accounts and move them to another bank. He offered to do a bank to bank transfer . I turned it down and said that I would prefer to see the funds in my own hands when I leave the bank today. . Which is how it ended.

Since then I have always used a couple of different banks and a credit union for my banking needs. If one screws up I still have something to fall back on. .
