even then it's chancy because not everywhere has cell towers where you have coverage. When I was planning a trip recently but cancelled, I found that a) my phone plan wouldn't cover me internationally so I bought a Google Fi sim & b) that not everywhere on the island got decent cellular service, so you'd be stuck with whatever pub WiFi you could find on the go; or in this case whatever is provided in your hotel room. :)

i think its important to me, that it be available everywhere, for everyone to have access to it.

"on holiday" i leave phones behind, i don't need to be available for anyone to get in touch with.
but when i'm wandering around seeing odd and different things, which are what inspire ideas i want to depict in images,
other things i could or would do with those same odd shape, well then to be able to upload those images i'm inspired to create,
yes i want that. its very important to me for people who don't live in urban areas to be able to share their own created content,
with the rest of the world.

this my be not completely on point for the question, but it is as close as my perspective gets to it.

i don't think of "on holiday" as a thing. outside of the social box, yes, but not "on holiday".
life isn't about indenturing yourself to some kind of big deal, so "on holiday" is what i am,
every time i walk out my door, unless or until i get to someplace where someone else is expecting me.

Ha-ha. Once the older generation get let loose on the gadgets, they seem to become like kids again.
A few months ago, one of our friends sons was getting upset because his gran was hogging his computer games and crashing cars like a kid, She is 82. :yum:

I do like to use it to look up restaurants and other points of interests, but it isnt neccesssry.

And I've also gotten into the habit of feeling like I need google maps to get around when I travel but I also hate that, I never had a problem getting around strange places before google maps. I just have to remind myself I have a good sense of direction. I feel gps systems are killing our natural sense of direction.
When I was in New York a couple months ago I kept getting confused with google maps anyways. I made my way around much better when I stopped using it and figured out the grid system.
But I did use a subway app on my phone that was absolutely indispensable

I have a terrible sense of direction. However, I have never got lost in NYC.
I also found the people living there incredibly helpful.

They really are! New Yorkers get a bad rep but I've found they're very kind and helpful

    I prefer Wi-fi-less.
Society is too much chained to the WW Inter-Web. A holiday should be one where one can forget about the daily reliance and habitual use of IT.

That is true. No Wifi in the New Forest here. Some do get lost.

Comments on this thread make sense about using gadgets to find your way around and select a restaurant, but I prefer to just ask other people and the locals.
Technology can end up being rather antisocial and avoiding the chances of making new friends when you are away from home.
In the past, I met many interesting people who were lost or needed advice in central London, but today, they seem to prefer to ask Google, that someone who lives and works in the area..

That could be very useful with our complex system in London. The problem here is that most people you ask would probably be visitors themselves and you would end up in Timbuktu

You know what’s nice to be able to do on holidays? FaceTime or Skype family and friends you aren’t able to go see I’m person, especially during those times.

But you miss the fun of showing them the pictures you took when you get home, particularly the ones where you accidentally clicked the good old fashioned camera and did not even see them yourself until you got home. :yum::yum::yum:

True, but I sometimes wonder whether social media reduces the need to visit and enjoy the company of your friends.
In some ways, it can end up becoming antisocial in real terms.
Clearly it all depends on the people using it and whether they start letting it rule their lives.

I tell you what I dont get nowadays...

Tourists that travel around without a sim card, thus dont have google maps working on their phone

I think they are diluting the gene pool

Who does that? Fly to a new city, not get a sim card when you get out of the airport then ask 10 people dumb questions on how to get where ever
