how do you feel about calling a black haired pet the N word?

I don't understand why people get their panties all bunched up over stupid things like words. I'd much rather have words flung at me than fists.

 

In a literal sense you would be correct. As everyone knows though, the meaning of what you say can only be defined as what the listener hears and what they percieve it to be.

 

The etymology of the word is very racist.

I would be bothered simply because it would bother me to have a friend who would use that word, period, much less to think it is an amusing thing to call a cat. Words do matter; they are very powerful

 

If I had a friend who threw such inflammatory words around so carelessly I'd be questioning my judgment in choosing friends.

Yeah words ARE powerful and i dont like the word, i personally dont use it. However, the problem is with people saying "oh gosh, we musnt say the n-word ever!" and campaigning against it etc is that it is glorifying the whole situation, drawing more attention to it if you ask me. Its hard to explain...Its like being SO uptight about it is making an issue where there is none, which drags up racism unnecessarily. I really doubt the cat owner is a true racist, he just thinks its a giggle and is obviously unaware of the true suffering behind genuine racism and how it can be connected. But really, it sounds innocent, i wouldnt make a fuss

I wish i could explain better...if someone called me a name because my skin is white id just plain laugh. Obviously its different because of past suffering, BUT by taking such offense so easily its like saying they have power and skin colour is enough of an issue to get your panties in a twist over, and it just isnt

i just have a problem with the words like the nword because ive actually seen a group of white kids calling a lone black kid the nword and pushing him around, when i was in grade one and i couldnt do nothing about it because i was getting beat up everyday and if they found out i went to a teacher id probably get kicked in the head, soo its just something that stuck with me throughout my life, its wrong and i do find it offensive, just like someone coming up to me and calling me a pole because im polish and i celebrate the fact that im polish, ive had that happen to me and i had to hold myself back from knocking the asshole out, no matter what the context the words are being used in they still are offensive and if a person that the words were used to bring down ever heard a kid calling his cat ********"the only time youll hear me say it" im pretty sure he'd be pretty offened and probably want to knock the kid outcold

any use of racial/ethnic epitaths bothers me because politicians still use any wedge they can to gain advantage by deviding people against each other, and their doing so is what creates prejudices and all the suffering they cause in the first place.

i don't thing everyone thinks about this, or realizes it, or even neccessarily intends any harm by doing so. but it is still a symtum of what amounts to a disease of society.
