Some people have out of body experiences in situations of medical emergency. It happened to 2 different people I know in different circumstances. One of them, during an operation, another who nearly drowned and was 'dead' for about 3 mins before they brought him back. Both described actually looking on as medics were working on them - in both cases what they saw was actually quite mundane, but both said, fully convincing. I don't think either one was fabricating it either.

Experiences on DMT, high doses of acid even ketamine have a different aspect. All 3 in my experience can lead to a feeling of having gone off 'elsewhere' - but with such experiences it's easier to accept that they are simply experiences of changed functioning in the brain. Where it just occurs because a person is actually on the edge of dying it's different. Although some might say it's a huge dump of endogenous DMT into the brain.

On the other hand I quite like the idea that there may be other dimensions of consciousness existing independently of us, into which we can project our own awareness. That's more or less the basis of shamanistic use of psychedelics.

The few NDE experiences I've read sound remarkably similar to powerful psychedelic experiences.

They seem to come in different categories judging from what I've read. Some do definitely seem to resemble psychedelic experiences.

I think these things are interesting, and raise questions as to what exactly is going on. I don't think these experiences prove anything either way as regards the question of consciousness surviving death.

I am 50/50 on this as I said. On one hand, I like science, and the standard materialist view is something I understand.
On the other hand, although I don't like religion, I find the core ideas of shamanism very interesting too, and maybe from that I get some deeper experience of life - the question of death will be decided at the moment of death. No amount of argument is going to resolve the issue.

BBB, I have heard of people speaking of seeing themselves on operating tables, as well......but ....the jury is still out on the topic.....so I am pretty much like you......50/50 on it..........no proof of anything yet....but I am not going to worry about it.....it certainly is a very interesting subject, though.... :)

Probably in the future more research will be done into these things. Just as now they're doing research again with psychedelics. Who knows what might be discovered. These are exciting times to live in.

Yes as the scope of psychedelic experiences tend to have variability.

    Which experience is which?

    Your just so nice.

I wish I was a lot smarter than I am. Take it from me, in many ways I'm just an old fool.

This. There won't be a "me" around when "I" am dead.

Death doesn't worry me . . . after all, before you were born, ,you were dead, right? Was it bad? :)

Dying is the scary part that our society needs to start handling better. Needless prolongation of life just to prolong life is a kind of fetish that we need to snap out of. A good death is part of a good life.

FYI: The oldest living person ever recorded was a French woman named Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122, from 1875-1997.

I would like to live that long. It would be cool. What else am I going to do? Hang out in the multiverse with all the bacteria?

You're a frog, so you should be hanging out at a lily pond.

Frog's die too, though. And what happens to frogs when they die?

They rot, unless eaten by a predator. It's not easy being green. ;)

You seem to have "discovered" a rather ordinary fact, that everything and everybody dies. I don't know what anybody can do with that information other than get over it.

Animals are naturally Zen. Frogs don't spend any time worrying that they will die someday. They're busy living in the moment. Not a bad approach.
