Since you can't do anything about it and you are up anyway get something done that you have been putting off doing. Might as well make use of the time.

i went over tried to knock then left a note. when it didnt stop cause i heard them say someone is at the door i started looking for their car to fuck with. Then decided it was a bad idea i needed to calm down and wait till i can call someone.

i now remember this is bad place to ask for help outside of gardening. thought i was doing something by talking to someone else online till i could use the phone

You must have the same landlord that I do. I went through a couple months of getting less than 4 hours a sleep a night. (I need a lot more sleep than that!)

I talked to the head maintenance guy a couple times to complain and he said that the workers choose their own hours and that they only paint at night. I told him if that is all they were doing they were painting with hammers and power tools.

Eventually they finished working on the upstairs apartment and someone moved in who is quiet, at least when I want to sleep.

Sorry. No advice. But I do hear you.

What kind of illegal stuff does your roommate do that you can't call in a noise complaint?

Most cities have a set time when work can begin, usually 7am. Call the building department and they ,more than likely will warn him to stop. That's a public nuisance.

The work will eventually be done. Until then, use earplugs.

I disagree. I don't think the recipient of noise at 3 in the morning should be the one to adjust their behaviour. It's accepted that most people sleep at night and that certainly includes 3 AM in the morning. It's just not acceptable to pound the shit out of stuff at that time of the morning if one is disturbing the sleep of others.

    I agree with scratcho.

Not getting proper sleep can cause a lot of health probs. The op has an AA sponsor, so this won't help him.

Call in the noise complaint. Warn your roommate to hide his shit.

for a temporary solution, instead of ear plugs, which are uncomfortable and fall out, i just used my big can headphones (or whichever are most comfortable for you, noise exclusion being optimal) and listened to a 10 hour soft white noise sample, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNqERBWaJeM
    way better than ear plugs.

well, i don't find them uncomfortable per se, but i find the sensation of having my ears blocked to be kind of difficult to ignore, the white noise works for me a lot better.

earplugs bother me a bit at first but once i fall asleep it totally fine (unless i start snoring)

gotta push them in deep though...it makes a crazy sound if the little removal stick scratches over the pillow

Don't be a fucking pussy mayne. Knock/bang on the door until they answer it, and nicely say dude you are being loud as shit and I can't sleep..

Then if he's a dick after you nicely yet firmly request he stfu, egg his car.
