I was fifteen, and I bought the "very best of the grateful dead" at Target and immediately listened to the whole thing while walking around outside. That was my first ever experience with the Grateful Dead! Before that I had started smoking herb that same year and I was listening to bands like black sabbath and Janis joplin and many more. I was aware of the grateful dead but never listened. I remember listening to that c.d. and thinking that it wasn't quite what I expected but they are a band beyond description! I was a passive GD fan at this point and I was walking home from wherever one day with a friend and we found like ten c.d.s on the side of the road and one of them was the grateful dead self titled. It was so different from the cd I bought I was blown away. I started collecting until now I have a shelf of GD vinyl (and many other bands. I started my vinyl obsession before I started smoking herb) and a binder bursting at the seams with GD albums and bootlegs. The bus came by and I got on!
