Einstein's theory of relativity - it's an interesting read Bill Bryson gives a simple but useful analogy to help us mere humans get our head around the concept..... "imagine someone from a universe that contained only flat (physical) surfaces, someone who had never seen a sphere, being brought to earth. No matter how far he roamed accross the planet's surface, he would never find an edge, he would eventually come back to the same point where he started and would be utterly confounded to explain how that had happened. We are in the same position in space as our puzzled flatlander, only we are flummoxed by a higher dimension"... not just our physical senses
I think broony pretty such summed it up. It's all a matter of what you believe really. A big handful of the world are catholic or christians and believe that God created everything on this earth including humans, animals, etc. I happen to be one of them. When I die, hopefully my soul goes to heaven and live in eternal peace with God. Then there is also the Big Bang Theory, which to be completely honest, in my opinion, sounds like a load of baloney. I mean, a giant bang, from nowhere, did not just create an ever expanding universe nor did it create all the millions and billions of stars, planets and galaxies. Scientists probably came up with this theory, knowing they couldn't come up with anything smarter. And they're many, many more religions and beliefs out there that established their theories and where things came to be. The truth is, there really isn't a real answer and it's just a matter of what you believe. Being that the religion with the most followers is Christianity, with Jesus Christ being down here and the Bible and all, you can't go wrong there. I hoped I was of assistance.
Just believing something does not make it true. They used to believe the Earth was the center of the universe and everything revolved around it. Not true. In reality the big bang theory is the most logical theory to date given all we know. As we learn and discover more that may very well change, but we do have to go by what is KNOWN and work from there. Any fool can pull theories out thier ass, but if the evidence before us does not support it then of what value is it besides a fanciful dream or a scenario for a sci-fi story? It is also very much in accordance with the Biblical story of creation. One second there is essentially nothing and then Bang Let there be light and everything came into being. The question is then WHAT or WHO initated that first event? That is still in need of an answer.
I really don't understand. You illustrate a closed universe here, but seems to postulate things outside of the big bang.
All of our physical measurements and theories of universal promulgation are post big bang. There is no model for what the primordial condition is.
Isn't that what I said right here... Of course it is an impossibilty according to all we know and understand to KNOW what the conditions were pre-big bang, but everything extrapolated backwards does tend to lead us to a single event. The initial singularity. Again we are stating the same thing with different wording.
who's definition of a closed universe are you using? i'm mainly familiar with a closed universe theory being that gravity will eventually cause the universe to retract back into itself and becoming a singularity then will presumably start all over again if you mean closed as a specfic boundary, where the physical universe as we know it stops... then the analogy is meant to loosely illustrate that due to the nature of the curvature in the space time continuim, any "boundary" or "edge" of the universe is impossible to discover, much less cross wether the universe is (or is to become) open closed or flat is a bit of a bugger of a question, as universe itself seems to prevent us discovering the answer i told ya it was a strange place unless all the matter and energy in the universe has always existed there was something outside/prior to the Big Bang.... we just have no way of knowing what it was.. or if the universe is closed and we are simply existing in one of the infinite repetitions that the matter+energy have always gone through
We are in good standing then. Just thought I might throw a monkey in the mix by saying that there could be something about that initial condition that could change our fundamental understandings. I personally think that this consciousness thing that we are present to has something to do with the process of extension or creation. I think that somewhere within ourselves there is some process that demonstrates the answer to these questions.
:cheers2: I agree, I feel human conciousness is the X-factor in this whole play we are currently performing/watching. Would any of this exist if we were not here to experience it? That question has the same answer as the famous "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" The world may never know.
Yes, but we were sent down here with no answers to our questions. Wondering where did we come from, everything around evolve from? If one hundred percent correct information are not proven nor does believing in something make it true, then what is one to do?
I think that this is where the doubt enters the equation. When I say consciousness I don't mean specifically consciousness in human form. We know that there are all manner of self aware creatures but I think all of these are forms of a fundamental intent and this fundamental intent can be described in varying levels of intensity. Just as the laws of probability insure that we emerge in the way that we have. I think our psyche has a way of apprehending fundamental design. Another word for gravity is intent. To me this question holds no appeal. There is nothing I can do about things that may or may not occur in my absence. I do exist and my existence is real. A question I am more interested in is what is it for?
It's okay, be yourself. PB is working on developing some true grit in regard to the perception of his own image. It is one thing to appear cool and another to be cool. PB is cool because his heart is in it and he would do good to rely on that point.
Huh?? Not sure what you mean by that. True Grit, like John Wayne? @infantdressingtable all I meant by my response is that is a sentiment and question shared by all of us at some point and to some degree. It's part of being human and self aware. Sorry if it wasn't clear.
