i'd still be the same loner that i am. i don't know, i might actually have been more social as a teen. you've gotta remember, my teen years were in the 1960s. i wouldn't have found out about going into the airforce as a cooperative noncombatant. so i would have gotten drafted into the army and sent to viet nam to kill people. if i didn't get myself killed there, having no other real prospects and not having the same moral background that i do, i would probably have stayed in the 20 years, made rank of some kind, gotten the big pension for whatever rank i would have made. i'd still have taken outside college classes while in. gotten my g.e.d./h.s. completion while in.
when i got out, 18+20=38. i'd have gone to work for the railroad for the next 15 to 20 years after that. so i'd probably have ended up better off financially, but dumber then a post and clueless, then i am now. a good little obedient corporate zombie. well i don't know. you know, being more social and an army career like that, if i'd have kept it, i'd have probably made a lot of the wrong kind of friends and 'friends'.

there's a lot of randomness there, other then the inclinations of my spirit. i might have had enough of military after two or three terms. might have gotten anti-war anyway. a lot of people in the military do. might have made a lot of enimies too. might have been more outspoken. gotten myself in all kinds of interesting trouble. might have become like the stainless steel rat, if anybody knows about that series of stories, written by harry harrison i believe, back in the 80s. just depends on the resources i would have had after i got out. then again, from that background, i might have had the balls to hitchike to canada. (canada, during viet nam, was the great free north for any male of draft age who couldn't get a college defferment) if i'd done that, well i'd have remained a canadian citizen and never even thought about heading back to the u.s.

what i'd have ended up doing up there, i have no idea. maybe railroad, construction, or resteraunt work.

Let's see... Parents split when I was 10. I left high school for a failed attempt at community college, and drifted, learning about the world and people. Held a series of jobs I'd not want again.

    Went on renfaire circuit.
Lived in Mexico, UK and several states.

Had a kid younger than I probably should have.
Went back to college to rectify that slate of Fs.
Married the great love of my youth. Traveled doing art shows and toured with some bands.

    Became a reporter.
    Lost that after a decade.
Also worked in a music venue part time, with the kiddo, no less. (Job skills!)
    Became a massge therapist.
Wrote a book for someone else.
Writing a book for me, slowly.
So of all those, I was briefly a street performer, sort of.

What I can say is that I learned that judgemental statements say more about the speaker.

Mom divorced dad when I was two, married an army dude for ten years, divorced him and married a guy less than 9 years older than me. She told me I'd be a worthless bum the whole time I was growing up, so I fulfilled her expectations. Joined the army at 17 to keep from going to prison for stealing a carton of cigarettes. Took the GED test two months later and got my HS diploma. Got an honorable discharge three years later. Haven't had a job for more than six months since getting out of the army in 73'. But I've been with my wife for 30 years, and she can retire next week. But she likes her job, so she probably won't.

I'm the poster boy for this thread.

I don't see the "get a ged, work, get training, put yourself through school, be happy and be succesful" choice.

You don't need to be any of them. personally, I just became an isolated individual (internally). No drug addictions, no jail, the odd shoplift as a teen, military at 17 which is the way I lived for the better part of 20 yrs, with that military attitude and hidden emotions.

So I think your list is somewhat subjective, ordinary and judgmental. While some lean down those roads, IMO most just lead unnoticed, isolated, insecure lives.

That is because it is the least provocative and sexy choice. We are lead to believe that a person from that kind of upbringing can only amount to a life of hooliganism. (never thought I'd use hooliganism in a sentence :) ) Which is just mislead like most logical and truthful choices.

I would probably work at one of the many jobs that don’t require a High School Diploma like Warehouse worker, Truck Driver, Garbage Collector, Bartender, Oil Field worker, Day Laborer, Taxis Driver, Auto Service Technician, Carpenter, Welder, Diesel Mechanic, Hospitality worker, Concierge, Cruise Ship, Hotel worker, Cleaner, Landscaper, (and there are many more)
