I am eating from plant since 30 years, I was thinking I could be labelled as vegan, but I just discover that I still eat honey and that is just making me a vegetarian..I understand that some vegan are thinking that eating honey is encouraging the exploitation of bees, but some other people are saying that bees produce too much honey, others are saying that man is helping bees to exist because they are disappearing, and rearing them is making sure they are still existing and multiplying..I am also wondering if we can make a distinction between a slaughter house and a beehive..
I know somebody rearing bees that has a lot of respect for them, I do not imagine him killing any bee..
What do you think about all this? Are we really a nuisance to bees when we eat honey?

Well I'm not 100% about this but I think animals get killed in a slaughterhouse and bees just produce honey in a bee hive.

Now when the bees produce honey and nobody eats it, seems a bit of waste as far as I'm concerned so no I don't see a problem with it. The problem with declining bees at the moment is cross pollination that isn't happening.

I think at the end of the day, certain animals produce ingredients and material that we can all benefit from and that's just the way life is for them. I mean bees aren't flying around thinking they need to make honey for the human overlords. They're just doing what they're doing. We can take advantage of that. :)

You should watch the children's film, bee movie..might be for kids education, but us adults could learn from it... eat honey, and save our planet, use bees wax, any bee product, we need to encourage bees, so go for it!

I guess technically honey isn't vegan because it is an animal product, but I think veganism can be a bit too extreme in that regard too. I understand avoiding animal products if an animal is killed or has to suffer, but I don't really understand things like not eating eggs, for example, as long as the chickens are taken well care of.

And so I don't really understand avoiding honey either. Beekeepers are really important to the survival of the species and i dont see anything cruel or inhumane about collecting the honey from the bees.

Bees pretty much pollinate everything we eat, so in that respect there's little in the Vegan food chain that doesn't involve bees helping to make it. Without them we would all die.

I got stung by a bee the other day but I don't give a fuck about that, insects are the least of my worries right now.

Well of course it's not "vegan". An insect is different from an animal.

Microorganisms are in and involved in the production of all food, so technically nothing is 100% vegan. They're even found in water.

The question ultimately here is, is honey ethical, and the answer is of course is it, as long as the bees are farmed ethically.

Purist vegans are silly. Get some cheese inside you you stick insects. You look like Carol.

Honey is not vegan. Vegan is a philosophy, not a diet. It informs your diet choices, your fiber choices and such, but it's not a mere diet.

Veganism says that animals are not here to serve humans. Bees and silkworms are covered by that.

Now, is small scale honey ethical? It can be. Depends on the apist.

How do you account for the fact we need to farm bees on a large scale in order to pollinate our crops, within the philosophy of veganism?

Even if we lived in an ideal world the bees still naturally "serve" our survival needs. I know it's not the same and many other insects are involved, but that's just the way it is.

I speak as a vegetarian of 20 years who has tried veganism but likes my dairy prods too much.

I speak as a vegetarian of, oh geez, 36 years. (wow, I hadn't counted in a while. Get off my lawn)
    Using bees is not vegan.
Many things done in big Ag, even big organic Ag, are not vegan.

There are people and organizations suggesting that the US, where honeybees are feral, not native, stop trucking the bees from crop to crop.
I think we have too few pollinators thanks to Ag chems, and it's a bad idea to stop moving bees, for now. Build up local pollinator numbers first.

Oh you totally pwned me on the vegetarian front. Even if I wait another 16 years, you'll still be 16 years ahead of me!

By the way, just wondering. Do vegans eat Quorn chicken nuggets?

I've never considered Quorn. It's mycelium, which is plant kingdom, but what's the preparation!? Any whey, egg binder, etc?

Yes. Quorn is evil, but I tolerate it sometimes now because Linda fucking McCartney bought Realeat Vegemince a few years ago, and I have yet to learn how to make seitan.

If vegan is an ethical, how do you call the person that is eating pure plant-based products but don t give a damn for the ethical aspect?
The extremist vegans are getting to my head, what are they doing when a roach is in their kitchen or when a snail is eating their salads in their garden?
We can be ethical, but still we have to live!!!they remind me of these Jains in India that do not wear no clothes, do not dig out food, and walk with a mask in front of their mouths not to kill insects!!!
