I didn't feel like buying any screens so I cut a small square from a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil and poked many small holes in the center of it using a thumbtack trying to make mostly small holes close together but some bigger holes here and there. Then I just trimmed it down until it was the right size to fit into the pipe. It works well so far.

It's not meant to be a permanent solution, but it does work.

It actually stays in the pipe pretty well. It won't stand up to a whole lot of poking into the bowl but it doesn't really matter since it's just a peice of foil.

another good temporary solution is to drop in a pebble just a bit bigger than the hole. works really well as long as you don't take super aggressive pulls on it.

Yeah, I've gotten a little flaming cherry to the back of my throat a time or two. Not to mention some ashes, lol.

I spend like $3 for 2 dozen screens at my local head shop. Well worth it, smoking foil is not good for you.

I have also balled up a small peice of chore boy and stuck it down where the hole is...i'm sure both of these are probably harmful to your health but can't possibly be worse than stick welding or MIG welding on aluminum, or any type of welding for that matter, but stick welding is so notoriously dirty

Most of us welders wear respirators when welding.

Ick. I used to do that. Someone once told me, inhaling fumes from heated foil can cause 'bubbles.in your brain' I dont know the truth behind that, but it really is common sense that heating up foreign objects and inhaling it isn't good for you.

    This.^

But I prefer using bowls that don't need screens. I haven't had to use any in several years.

I've never seen a welder use a respirator. Nice shops will have good ventilation though, with hoods above work areas.

yes, some bowls have a hole that's small enough that you don't need one. This pipe is too big to do that unless you kind of stop it up with a large piece of weed and don't hit it so hard that you suck the weed thru.
