Yeah having total freedom IS nice. But having certain comforts like a roof over your head, a hot shower anytime you want, drinking water anytime you want and food anytime you want...that's nicer. Is it a form of slavery as a fellow hippy told me once before? Yeah, in a way we will always be slaves of some sort.

So long as I pay my mortgage, water, electric, sewer, trash and gas, I have my home. Fuck the world. And if I wanna go out homeless for a bit, I can, and always have somewhere to fall back on.

Something I forgot to mention earlier, is when I was homeless, I had the money to take care of most of my needs, and I never had to ask for any help (except for a few times I ran out of gas in my truck, but I always earned the money or paid it back), and certainly not utilize and public aide programs.

Some people just have the overwhelming urge to run, escape, and not be tied down.
I don't. I like my nest. But I've seen it.

showers......every city in north America has a shelter with showers....

swimming pools have shower facilities.....ymca has showers.....friends have showers.....jump in the lake.....whore showere if no real shower is available

a whores shower is when you wipe your important stuff with a wet cloth in a gas station or bus station washroom

If you have a car, that's good. You can carry a lot more with that. Get a Solar Shower. Darlin', that is a great tool to have! Fill it with water and let it sit in the sun & heat up. You can get a pretty nice hot shower on the cheap!

I will say that if being homeless is so good, why is it so many homeless people ask for help? Only do it voluntarily if you have the resources to take care of yourself. Otherwise it might not be a good idea. Your call, however.

Sho, nice life you all have that none of you have ever been close to homelessness

Enjoy your "half and half coffee every morning" with the knowledge that there are people dying on the streets every day. Sure is nice to ignore the struggles of others.

Even if homelessness IS optional - why should you judge? I have a bigger issue with people who flaunt their wealth whilst there are little kids starving daily than I do with someone who renounces earthly possessions and chooses to be homeless

Am I also to acknowledge the struggles of those stupid people who have a place to live but choose to be hippy homeless?

Are you implying that by drinking coffee every morning, someone is choosing to 'flaunt their wealth'?

Tatterdemalion, who are you to tell us what we've been through? Some of us have been homeless before. Some of us still qualify as homeless.

That shows you not only havn't read this thread, but you havn't read other posts on this subject.

I think it would be a good idea for you to do some research before you start making such brash comments.

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."

Well, I suppose that she should have said "some of you" rather than "all".

The basic points seem valid to me.

The OP doesn't seem to me to be entirely homeless by choice (i.e., he got kicked out). For his own sake, I think that he would be better off looking for work or joining a commune.

A big part of the controversy of this thread may stem from the "Homeless and Free" title.

My guess is he may have chosen this title because it sounded a little more dignified than "Homeless and Fucked"

For myself, I am not broke broke, I will just be out of a home so my plan is to get a YMCA membership and workout and shower there. Our local Y also has city library attached and they all give free wifi.

Without a home, I will not need to pay for an internet connection so I may take the money we usually put on that and up my data plan so I can hotspot my phone, if I'm parked somewhere were I can't pilfer bandwidth.

I found a place I can sleep indoors for January. No amount of work on my van between now and then is gonna be enough to deal with freezing weather.

Maybe without rent, we'll be able to save. I dunno. The hub will be staying with his mother as he looks for a job. Hopefully if he lands a decent job, apartments will rent to us. His unemployment seems to be the biggest barrier to signing a lease...even though we have a co-signer and guarantors

I don't know if you've given more details on another thread, but if not, you might want to.

Folks here may be able to help you make plans.

Can you stay with your hub or with a relative? Even if you don't want to do this, having some back-up plans might help. Things could fall through with your January housing.

There may be some social services that could help you.

Housing law might allow you to stay in your current residence if you don't have other housing available.

    We've been checking out services.
I think we could technically squat in our current place because it's January but then we're dealing with legal crap, and sheriffs and shit. I also have some pride issues.
We'll see. We've got a few plans on the go, so we'll be prepared for whatever happens.

you may be able to find a super cheap house share. I once knew this guy that was renting for $100/month a walk-in closet as a bedroom. There was just enough room in it for a bed, but that's all he really needed.
