I've tried it a few times, but no-one ever stopped, I expect I probably looked too scary to them. Last time I tried to hitch a lift from a truck at the entrance to a ferry, the idea was I would maybe get a lift on the other side of journey to where I was heading as I knew a lot of lorries went that way. No-one stopped, but I don't think any of them knew I did actually have a ticket for the ferry as well.

There was one time I was walking out in the country, not far from home, on my way to a forest for the day, and this guy stopped and offered me a lift, even though i wasn't trying to hitch one. So I got in, seemed like a very pleasant chap, but he told me he was a diagnosed schitzophrenic while we were on the way. He didn't try and murder me with an axe though.
