What was Russia before it was Russia? Once the preeminent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.; commonly known as the Soviet Union), Russia became an independent country after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. History of Russia - Wikipedia
During WWII, the bloodiest siege in History was fought in Russia. What we know today as St. Petersburg was once known as Leningrad, names after Vladimir Lenin himself. Nazi forces surrounded the city and cut off all possible exits and entrances to the city so no food and supplies could get in to the starving citizens. Hitler was so confident that he would take the city, he had a celebratory dinner planned. Shockingly, the citizens of Leningrad held out for over 900 days!!!! They survived famine, freezing temperatures and no electricity! Local radio stations constantly played a ticking sound as to remind the people that the heart of their city still beated fast and strong.
The citizens of Leningrad weren't totally cut off. Supplies did reach them and people were evacuated across Lake Ladoga. During the winter it was possible to bring trucks across the frozen lake. In summer ships did the same journey.
The biggest tank battle took place on Soviet soil - the battle of Kursk involving over 2 million men.
The Great Patriotic War (Russian: Вели́кая Оте́чественная война́, romanized: Velikaya Otechestvennaya voyna; Ukrainian: Велика Вітчизняна війна, romanized: Velyka Vitchyzniana viyna; Belarusian: Вялікая Айчынная вайна, romanized: Vialikaja Ajčynnaja vajna)[a] is a term used in Russia and some other former republics of the Soviet Union[1] to describe the conflict fought during the period from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945 along the many fronts of the Eastern Front of World War II, primarily between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. For some legal purposes, this period may be extended to 11 May 1945 to include the end of the Prague Offensive.[2] The end of the Great Patriotic War is commemorated on the 9th of May.
SUPER-LOL: i posted a mutilated comment about aspirin and Rasputin... the bottom line was that while he was present, he forbade the use of medicinals in favour of prayer, which ironically was a good thing since the Zarevich stopped taking the noxious aspirin.
EERIE FACT: Bobby Farrell, dancer and main singer of the group Boney M , who sang the song "Rasputin", died in St. Petersburg on dec., 30th 2010. Grigori Rasputin died in St. Petersburg on dec., 30th 1916. What we learned: you probably don't want to get ol' Grigori too angry. But if you do, at least stay the heck away from st. Petersburg.

The largest ethnic cleansing in history took place after WW2. Around 12 million ethnic German civilians fled or were expelled from Eastern Europe. The number killed during cleansing is disputed, estimates range from 0.5 - 2.5 million. This gets little mention in history books and most people don't seem to be aware it happened. Yes I have read a lot about that. That is why we must all strive to spread love and support to all. X
The amount of acts of heroism in Leningrad at some point grew so high that they put to shame all the rest of the Red Army forces , so the government ultimately stopped giving accounts of them to prevent embarrassment among the rest of the troops fighting hitler on all other front lines. During all the siege, the factory workers kept rolling out T-34 tanks spite of a daily diet of about 300 calories.
